The Handley Submarine of Mobile in the Civil War
A fragmentary account recalls a 1864 Mobile built boiler iron submarine by Handley and McClintock. It sank in Charleston harbor after a failed attack on the USS Housatonic, killing eight, with Lt Payne and six others perishing. Divers later found the boat wrecked under Charleston Bar.
