Cattle King Buchanan Wins New Trial On Reversed Case

Eugene Buchanan and associates who were sentenced in 1914 for defrauding a homestead farm face a new trial after the U.S. circuit court of appeals reversed the lower court. Monette gets two years and a $100 fine. Swatzlander thirty days and $100. August Zindt John Zindt Ole Simonson and Jake Miller also set for new proceedings. Buford Sales was not captured.

Grover School Wins Northeastern Weld County Track Title

Grover high under principal J D McMillen, formerly of Sidney, won the North Eastern Weld County high school track and field championship defeating Raymer seven to one and Kepta five to one. They also claimed the basketball title and took two of three gold medals in the declamatory contest.

Farewell Banquet For Howard I Hall Before Italy Departure

A Sunday night banquet at the Pacific House honored Howard I Hall on the eve of his departure for Italy. Leon Fine organized the event for sixteen close friends, with Radcliffe as master of ceremonies. The sixteen guests praised Hall in short speeches, while music and a final farewell song from The Bird of Paradise accompanied the three hour gathering. Hall will serve as Secretary in the American legation and study painting abroad, with friends expressing deep goodwill for his future.

Young Man Blodgett Declared Insane by Insanity Board

Asa Blodgett a 26 year old carpenter from Ori was brought before the insanity board on Tuesday, judged insane, and ordered sent to Ingleside. His father refused to intervene noting a prior asylum stay. The board members were Dr L G Simon attorney Gapen and County Clerk Doran.

Highth Grade Declamatory Contest at Sidney High

Sidney eighth grade declamatory contest scheduled for May 18 at 3 15 p m in the high school auditorium. Participants include Genevieve Bentley Gertrude Iverson Kenneth Jones Kinley McIntosh Clifton McIntosh Zella Owens and Marjorie Shipman with Lillian Barton Myrtle Fishman Grace Hornaday Dorothy Thornburg performing musical numbers and Miss Hodge offering a vocal solo. Rush for Nebraska land draws agents to the west

He says up to twenty callers daily at his Chicago office seek western locations, with most targeting Nebraska or Wyoming. He credits Nebraska’s strong last year crops as major advertising, predicting a spring rush into central and western Nebraska from wealthy buyers.

Engineer Peter Blank Dies by Suicide at Burlington Elevator

Peter Blank, an expert engineer with Murray Iron Works of Burlington Iowa, spent about two months installing engines and boilers at the municipal electro plant. He ended his life by plunging down a one hundred foot elevator shaft in Burlington, suffering from ill health and despondency.

First Meeting of the Sidney City Council in 1916

The Sidney City Council met May 5 1916 with Mayor J A McIntosh and eight councilmen. Protests were filed against saloon licenses for Semerad Aden and Den. Protests were to be heard May 12 and 13. Committees were named for Electric Light, Streets, and Finance. Windmill repair and water system extensions were discussed. A special session May 9 approved fire code ordinance 147 and authorized windmill and water crane moves.

S. T. Snyder and John Call appeared in court on Thursday over an argument about merchandise and labor debts. Snyder accused Call of assault. Call pleaded guilty and paid five dollars. Call’s remark about Snyder’s “sick language” was noted, but the case left unresolved who owed whom.
