Voter turnout lagged as 2,441 ballots were cast from 5,142 registered voters. Republicans led in turnout while write-ins shaped several contests including Dalton town board and Lodgepole village board. Absentee votes totaled 62, not altering the county race outcomes.

Suspect Arrested With 138000 Dollar Marijuana Stash

Federal agents seize 5 pounds of brick type marijuana valued at 138000 dollars from a car stopped by Trooper Richard Larsen on Highway 30 near Kimball. Robert J. Sanchez 29 of Maywood California arraigned in Kimball County jail for possession. Bobby Clinkenbeard led the Patrel drug division investigation.

Oil Well Tests Under Way Near Cheyenne County

Testing at the Nor Underdown well in southwest Cheyenne County began this morning with reports suggesting favorable prospects for production. The offset to a nearby well has averaged about 100 barrels per day, while the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission had no reports on testing results up to noon today.

Sidney police investigated a Sunday night one car accident on the parking drive at Sportsman Liquor. Lucile Fisher of 2044 Maple pulled from the driveway and hit a steel post guarding a planter, causing about 100 dollars damage to her car with no damage estimate for the post.

A 33 year old man wanted for parole violation in Michigan was arrested by Trooper Richard Larsen at 11 15 a m Friday one mile east of the Dix junction on Highway 30. Earl D Thompson Alma Michigan on parole for no account checks was stopped during a routine search and found to be wanted. He was taken to the Kimball county jail.

Trooper Jack Robinson of the Nebraska State Patrol reports two Sunday accidents both one car incidents with heavy damage and injuries. The first occurred at 12 30 a m on a county road 18.2 miles east of Dalton a 1957 Chevrolet station wagon driven by Michael L White 19 Steam Boat Springs Colo eastbound went out of control on a curve rolled over and landed in the north borrow pit White sustained a sprained ankle and bruises but the two passengers were not injured the vehicle was a total loss. The second at 10 p m Sunday three miles east of the Vo Tech school a 1968 Ford Mustang driven by Gayle L Martin 25 Stelnaurer Neb a Vo Tech student westbound went out of control on a corner rolled over once and then swung end over end twice Martin was pinned under the car for a moment until two motorists stopped lifted the car off him and took him to Memorial Hospital in Sidney Seat belts were not used.

Miss Poppy Susan Reed Promotes County Poppy Day

Susan Reed portrays Miss Poppy to urge county residents to wear a poppy in memory of fallen soldiers and to support the American Legion Auxiliary’s Poppy Program. Big Springs I-80 Junction deemed OK by publisher

Bob Pinkerton publisher of The Western Nebraska Observer in Kimball says the Big Springs I-80 junction is clearly marked and safe. He photographed the site last week showing signs indicate lanes for south or west and a right two lane curve to stay on I-80. He notes signage guides drivers from four miles out and avoids confusion about Denver or Sidney routes.

New Council Takes Over After Brief City Meeting

Sidney’s retiring council meets for a short agenda before turnover to the new board. George Elwood and Edward Bauman depart. Robert Hossle is reelected while Edward Haupt and John Gottschalk are elected. Gottschalk must resign from the planning commission. Old council to review county vote tally, treasurer’s report, bids for sidewalks on 19th and 24th Avenues, and approve minutes. New council will elect president and vice chairman, then appoint city manager, city clerk, planning commission, and housing authority members. Planning commission to convene after adjournment.

Third District Farm Total Falls 4032 Since 1965

U S congressman Dave Martin notes Nebraska third district farm counts dropped from 63 978 in 1965 to 59 946 in 1969 a 6 3 percent decline and says cropland totals remained largely steady at about 12 068 016 acres out of 20 014 208 statewide, despite fewer farms.
