High Calf Crop Boosts Profit in Beef Operations

Lincoln researcher Paul Guyer notes a high percentage calf crop most influences net profits in beef cow operations more than any other factor. He cites Nebraska studies on energy's role in cows coming into heat after calving and settling early for next season, urging applied research to confirm results under range conditions. About 60-70 percent of calves born in first 30 days and 95 percent in first two months indicate adequate energy in rations. If rates fall short, ranchers should identify and fix the problem to lift profits.
