Farmers flock to Cheyenne County ASC as signups for the 1964 voluntary wheat certificate program proceed toward the May 15 deadline. Office hours extend nights and Saturdays to ease farming schedules. State rules allow post May 15 completion if needed, with diversions, certificates, and price support details outlined.
The Rural Electrification Administration approves a 326000 loan to Wheatbelt Public Power District of Sidney to finance expansion and improvements. The project includes 32 miles of new distribution line for 92 customers, 5 miles of 34.5 kv transmission line, 2 miles of new high line, a substation at Big Springs, and remodeling of the Sidney headquarters. Congressman Dave Martin notes REA approval and Wheatbelt serves Cheyenne Morrill Garden and Deuel counties, supplying energy to Minuteman missile sites and rural communities.
Experts report western Nebraska wheat remains in good condition despite windy weather dampening moisture benefits. Box Butte Dawes and Sheridan counties show solid stands per agronomist Charles Fenster, with support from NN plant pathologists Dr. Mike Boosalis and Dr. John Weisong. University survey finds best wheat in southern Panhandle, with crown and root rot and mosaic observed in other areas. Frost-free last fall and early planting contributed to rot threats, yet current moisture levels are unexpectedly favorable. Weisong replaces Weising in local wheat work.

Harold Tremain a Sidney implement dealer and Nebraska Wheat Growers director says the voluntary wheat certificate program will add at least 1.8 million to Cheyenne County farmers income if the 1964 crop averages. He cautions gains depend on county wheat output and notes federal payroll reductions affecting Nebraska. Tremain criticizes Rep. Martin for opposing the program and urges state lawmakers to support agriculture as Sioux Army Depot payroll ends. Signups are ongoing with county offices kept open nights for farmers.
Cheyenne County and Region 16 show bond purchases above the annual quota for 1964. Cheyenne County reaches 41 percent of its quota with 407 512 dollars in three months, including 143 771 dollars in March. Region 16 totals 1 544 773 dollars for the first quarter, 41 7 percent of the regional quota. Cheyenne County trails Scotts Bluff in total purchases.
Lincoln attorney Philip C Sorensen seeking the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor spoke in Sidney saying combined industrial and rural development should be Nebraska’s focus for the next decade He urged the office be active and cooperative with the governor in state programs.
The postmaster announced a postal service cutback that will halt parcel post deliveries to residential and business sections of Sidney on Tuesdays.
Mrs. Fred Beyer 76 died Sunday night in Memorial Hospital after five days of hospitalization. Funeral services are planned for May 6 at 9:30 a.m. from St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Lawrence Portrey officiating. burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Rosary at 7:30 p.m. May 5 at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with Knights of Columbus rosary to follow. Memorial designation to Heart Fund. She was born Myra Jane Bayne February 19, 1888 in Winchester Missouri and married Fred J. Beyer May 3, 1905 in Osmond Nebraska. The couple came to Cheyenne County in 1909. Surviving are her husband, two daughters Clara Welton and Bernice Miller, two sons Willis and Raymond, four sisters, two brothers, twenty-one grandchildren and four great grandchildren. One son preceded her in death.
Patrons are informed the City Library will close on Wednesday May 6 to allow staff to attend the district library meeting. Several library board members also plan to attend.
Cheyenne County scouters received the most awards at the annual recognition dinner in Scotts Bluff sponsored by the Wyo Braska Area Council. Silver Beaver honors went to Leonard Bond of Lodgepole and Doyle Foland of Sidney, with prior Cheyenne County recipients named.
Bids to carry mail on the Sidney Sterling Cole star route are being sought. Submissions must reach the Director, Transportation Division, Denver before June 4. Bid forms are available at Sterling Padroni Peetz and Sidney post offices. New route bidding takes effect July 1 with a $5,700 bond required.
Cheyenne County Fair Board seeks local pioneer farm families for the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award. The ninth annual honor honors landowners who have held the same land for 100 years or more. Contact L. W. Lindell by July 1 1964 to nominate. awards include walnut bronze plaques and framed certificates.
Dr H V Nuss of Sutton elected to the Nebraska State Medical Association board of trustees. The board of councilors met with the State Medical Convention. Dr C B Dorwart of Sidney named to the council of Professional ethics, and Dr C A Kostal of Hastings named to the medical college advisory committee.
The Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce won the Nebraska Jaycee award for outstanding youth activities at the state convention in Norfolk. Ed Haupt accepted the plaque for work with Soap Box Derby, Little League baseball, and junior wrestling. Scrapbook of activities to enter national competition. New state Jaycee president is Dick Huebner of Grand Island. Attendees from Sidney included Mr and Mrs Ned Swaeby, Mr and Mrs Ed Haupt, Mr and Mrs Jerry Haupt, Mr and Mrs Lee Ross, and Mr and Mrs Bill Folkerts.
Cattlemen will hear a wheatman's perspective at the Sandhills Cattle Association annual convention on May 25 in Chadron. Herbert Hughes, former Nebraska Wheat Growers president and former international wheat trade board member, will discuss government agency roles in trade. A livestock feeding panel is planned, with Harry Synar of Northeast Oklahoma A and M College speaking at the banquet.
A Kimball man, David T. Laming, 25, was pinned under his overturned pickup near Dalton for about three hours. He survived with pressure injuries and lacerations but no fractures. The 4 am crash on a county road left the truck damaged at $800. Diagnosed as satisfactory, he is recovering at Pioneer Memorial Hospital.
A Sunday 11:30 a.m. one vehicle crash on county road nine and a half miles north and 2.7 miles east of Sidney involved a 1962 Ford pickup driven by Adam Bowzer, owned by Merton Bowzer. Mrs Bowzer and two children Creta Marie and James Lee were treated at Memorial Hospital for injuries and minor trauma.

Cheyenne County Sheriff’s office arrested a man in Sidney wanted by Scotts Bluff County on forgery charges. Gordon Hinman, in his 40s, allegedly used seven names to pass 15 to 20 bogus checks. He was found at a local hotel and registered as Gene Dooley. No forgeries were confirmed here.
