Oil drilling locations announced in western Nebraska

Western Nebraska hosts several new oil wildcat ventures. Arvel C. Smith from Wichita reports four farmout deals with The Texas Co. Locations include No. 1 Howaldt in Garden County, a 6000 foot test near Oshkosh, and No. 1 Sherlock in Morrill County. Other projects include No. 1 Hutchison near Greenwood and No. 1 Earl Henderson B in Sioux County. Banner County also shows leasing activity amid seismic work, with mixed early results in Sioux and Cedar Valley areas.

Panhandle wildcat tests in new locations announced

Ring-West Petroleum and Fletcher G Edwards spot the No 2 Muir QE NE Sec 35 19 54 and plan a 5200 foot J sand well using Ring-West tools. Scotts Bluff County wildcat to 6000 foot 1 sand, No. 1 Robert Cox NESW Sec 18 21 56, with Murfin Drilling as contractor. Additional drilling intentions announced or in process.

Lease Filings Show Oil Leases Near Gurley Discovery

Several oil leases totaling 960 acres around a recent discovery three miles south of Gurley have been filed by Hemisphere Oil Co and later assigned to L G Skelly. Leases cover three to five years on properties near the Lieber farm site where Midwest Oil Co found oil and drilled more wells, including a dry hole on the Schol farm. Local lessees include Freida Alschwede John H Scholl Arnold A Braasch and Herman F Kruse. Additional leasing activity appears in Cheyenne County with United States Smelting Refining and Mining Co and DeKalb Agricultural Assn filings in Sec 25-13-53 and 35-13-53, suggesting a countywide revival of leasing and assignment.

Two new wells begin drilling in Cheyenne and Kimball counties. Jack H McCollum and Area Petroleum drill No 1 Williams D near 22 16 50 Cheyenne with Regal Drilling. Baumgartner Oil mobilizes tools for No 1 Holt in Juelfs Field west of Dalton. Superior Oil reports production casing at Olsen No 89 19 Morrill with good shows and Panhandle natural gas discovery potential.

Retirement Ceremony For Col Smiley On Thursday

Col Stanley W Smiley commander of Sioux Ord Depot retires after long service since December 1940. A five PM retreat and retirement ceremony at the Sioux headquarters will be followed by a six PM reception at the Sioux Officers Club. Lt Col Cyril Williams will be master of ceremonies. Gas Rate Hike OKd by Sidney City Council

Sidney city council approved a higher natural gas rate with an average home impact near 11 percent, raising overall bills about 17.4 percent and sending the proposal to Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co for consideration. The May billing would enact the change while advertising continues.

Dalton Fire Department to get new truck and attend state school

Fire Chief Gordon Carley and Harold Winkelman of Dalton traveled to Logansport Indiana this week to acquire a new fire truck for the Dalton Department. They will stop at Grand Island for the state fire school and are scheduled to return to Dalton on Monday with the truck.

Fire Doused as Weeds Threaten County Bridge Near Sunol

Weed fire crews responded at 9 20 a m Tuesday to a blaze two miles west and one north of Sunol. Weeds along the road spread toward a wooden county bridge but caused no damage. Fire truck returned by 10 10 a m.

Reelected Hochman Leads United Fund Board Meeting

Benny Hochman was reelected general chairman of the United Fund of Sidney and Sioux Army Depot at a Monday night board meeting in the American National Bank building. Dr D J Garcia was reelected vice chairman and Dale Kinney was welcomed as a new board member representing Sioux Depot. A United Fund Day to kickoff next year's drive was discussed.

Cliff Thompson Dies at 70 in Sidney Rites Friday

Clifford G. Thompson 70, died of a heart attack at home Tuesday evening after residing in Sidney 14 years and working in Greenlees mens department. Funeral Friday May 1 at 2 p.m. from Christ Episcopal Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born Sept 6 1893 in Washington Iowa. Rustler Sought After Calf Theft Near Sunol

Cheyenne County Sheriff W W Schulz hunts a cattle thief who stole a two to three weeks old Hereford calf from Earl Gen's farm northwest of Sunol. The theft happened a little over a week ago and tire tracks were found leading to the pasture.
