Washington proposed farm legislation draws sharp criticism from farmers and Democrats alike. Wheat growers face no loan-rate increase from 225 dollars, leaving many calling for a fairer return and urging letters petitions and calls to the White House to protest the plan.
Sidney bankers and farmers warn that Carter’s price proposals fail to cover rising costs. WIFE leaders and local voices press Washington to raise loan rates, arguing wheat at about two dollars a bushel can't sustain farms after diesel, inputs, and equipment costs have surged. Some see potential foreclosures and supply management as necessary remedies.
A Dutch airliner mis grounded on takeoff collided with a Pan American Boeing 747 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife killing more than 550 people. About 70 survived. 240 of the dead were Americans, many from a charter tour. The Canary Islands crash is the deadliest aviation disaster on record.
A cancer seminar will be held at 30 pm Thursday, March 31, at the Senior Citizen Center in Sidney. Four short films will be shown with Q and A periods. Sidney doctor James Thayer and Mrs Lonnie Happold, Cheyenne County American Cancer Society chair, will help answer questions. Films include How to Examine Your Breasts, For a Wonderful Life, The Manasona uous Story, and Michael and Me. Sponsored by the Sidney Welcome Wagons New Farmer Club.
The Cheyenne County Honor Farm Award will go to Mr and Mrs Wilfred Nelson of Potter for conserving land and water. A dinner at Buffalo Bend on March 31 at 7 pm will present a color aerial photo of their farm by Far-Mer Co-op of Potter. Vincent Wright of Sidney will show a slide program Flora and Fauna of Western Nebraska. Tickets available at the NRC office in Sidney or from county directors Ed Block, Cliff Herholdshemmer, Richard Ladine, Robert Hoppencer, Lowe Sehniate.
Former State Sen Terry Carpenter of Scottsbluff will address the Women Involved in Farm Economics group at 1 30 pm Wednesday March 30 at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel in Sidney. The event is open to the public with limited seating. Carpenter has accused property tax assessments of being illegal and organized cases before the Nebraska Supreme Court challenging farm machinery taxation. He recently rejected by the Senate for the sunshine commission. State Sen Loran Schmit will speak April 5 at 2 30 p.m. to the same WIFE group in Sidney.
A potent storm moved into the Nebraska Panhandle with forecasts of heavy snow. Four inches or more could blanket the Panhandle by Tuesday morning as a low pressure system spurred mixed precipitation across the state.
Sidney City Council meets at 7 30 pm to hear public input on economic social impacts of proposed waste water treatment facilities and environmental effects with a city office chambers venue. The agenda includes curb sidewalk work along Parkland Drive lighting, a two person council committee for parking meters, and codified ordinances reform plus a forestry slide on a potential tree planting policy.
Cynthia Howe of Sidney and Gerald Messersmith of Alliance won the District 4-1 Public Speaking Contest held in Sidney, earning spots to represent the district at the state contest during State 4 H Club Week June 9-10 in Lincoln. Second and third place were Kim Koenig, Edwin Hanlon, Annette Wilkins, and Tobs Kimzey, with slides by Mark Christensen highlighting 4 H Club Congress experiences in Chicago.
With Thursday March 31 as the final day for 1976 crop wheat loans through the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Cheyenne County reports over 300 loans and more than a million bushels under loan. Farmers face loan caps of 209 dollars per acre at 7.2 percent interest while reacting to President Carter's farm proposal. NAWG seeks extension and proposes changes, sending a telegram to the White House urging reconsideration and a meeting with leadership.
