Panhandle highway work to cost over 870000 this year

Projects totaling more than 870000 are planned in the southern Panhandle with work starting soon. Contracts awarded include 133444 to Glenn Inc for Kimball to the Wyoming line and 318868 to Paulson Building and Supply for Sidney rest stop. resurfacing 385 from Gurley to Morrill line at 408405 to WA Biba Engineering and 16504 to Hill Sand and Gravel for guard rails. Work aims to improve I 80 rest stops and a 385 corridor project to span eight to ten years.

Winter storm possible again in western Nebraska

Western Nebraska braces for another round of rough weather as the National Weather Service issues a stockmen's advisory for the extreme west tonight and a winter storm watch for Saturday. Forecasters warn of heavy snowfall by Saturday with a cold front stretching from eastern South Dakota through central Nebraska to western Colorado and a low pressure center over western Colorado. Temperatures Thursday ranged from 65 to 75 across the region, with lows from 47 to 23 as easterly to southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph prevail in the west.

Calico Cat Emerges After Thirteen Days Under Snowbank

Butterscotch, a Calico owned by Mrs. Dave Narjes of the South Divide, survived 13 days beneath a snowbank on the Narjes farm near Sidney after vanishing during a March blizzard. Dug out by her relieved owner, the cat was thinner but lively, receiving milk and warmth at home. The episode ends with a joyful reunion as the cat sought cuddles.

Junior Leaders Camp Opens in Sidney With 4-H Activities

About 40 4-Hers are expected at the Panhandle District Junior Leaders Camp this weekend at Lodgepole Valley H Youth Camp. Registration begins today at 3:30. This afternoon features the District 4-H Speech Contest and several training sessions. Devel County Extension Agent Ray Sall will discuss 4-H records and awards, Joe Bonkiewicz of Sidney will present parliamentary procedure, and Dr John Orr of UNL will lead workshops.

The Fonz Urges Teens to Respect Themselves

Railroad program nets equipment for Western Nebraska college

SCOTTSBLUFF The 16 day 7000 mile trip by Western Nebraska Technical College officials to promote the railroad freight car maintenance program yielded promises for 129825 dollars worth of equipment. The board reported that 2532 54 of 3700 was spent and included seven secondhand freight cars and a diesel engine. 47 students indicated intent to enroll next session April 12.
