Ogallala Townsite sales and regional developments
Seventy five years ago the Ogallala Townsite Co sold sixteen town lots in one week with prices from thirty to two hundred dollars, while all Keith county land between the rivers was disposed of by the second market day. A new boxing contender Melvine Thompson challenged Sullivan with a possible $5,000 side, and Union Pacific planned to fence the North Platte to Ogden track to curb cattle delays. The Western Union telegraph poles upgrade signals renewed lines. Thieves were caught selling recovered clothing at the Bon Ton restaurant. In Sidney, 65 years back, depot stone work and streets were improved, trade grew, and a big building boom was anticipated with new depots, street paving and a possible Union Pacific engine stop in April. An array of local deaths, marriages, political candidacies, and community projects filled the week as Sidney prepared for wartime and postwar changes.
