East and South favored by federal wheat controls

Cheyenne County wheat growers are cutting acreage to satisfy government wheat allotments. The county ASC notes about 2,200 acres have shifted away this year, mostly to eastern and southern farmers who stay compliant. With June 1 as the compliance deadline, many fear losses to next years’ bases unless spring conditions allow hay. The program’s mechanics distribute noncompliant losses to compliant regions, prompting calls for changes and new crop rotations like safflower to protect base acreage.
