Oat and Barley Seed Treating Important This Year

Extension plant pathologist John L. Weihing of the University of Nebraska urges treating oats and barley seed before spring planting. The practice forms a protective armor to prevent parasites from rotting seeds and helps establish a vigorous seedling stand. Smut is the most common seedborne disease in Nebraska small grains.

It warns of barley scab on seed, describes its effects, and lists recommended chemicals Cerezan M and Agrox as superior seed treatments, with copper sulfate Arasan Spergon Phyrgon and formaldehyde as less effective but useful for other crops.
