Korea War Heroes: From Medal Winners to Jet Ace
Six men emerge as iconic figures of Korea’s early war era. Gen William Dean earned the Medal of Honor for tank assaults and aiding the wounded at Taejon. John Michaelis rose to Brigadier General after defending a Pusan perimeter. Gen Matthew Ridgway becomes UN forces commander following MacArthur’s dismissal. Marine Brig Gen Lewis Puller sparked headlines advocating tougher fighting. M/Sgt Ernest Kouma became the first MOH recipient in Korea to survive combat. Potter area notes mourn death and reunion events
A sister in Deshler Nebraska died and funeral plans were made as relatives traveled. Mrs Cizek and family left for Tucson for three weeks, and Marion Handspiker from Sidney visited Potter. The WSCS met with a large crowd and a lifelong program followed by a lunch. The American Legion hosted Franklin Horner and accompanist Eldred Merrick in an evening show. Families enjoyed picnics, travels, and Bible school activities as Bluebird Camp Fire groups received rank awards and members toured Lincoln, Denver, Paxton, and other towns.
