Certified Seed Scarce In Western Nebraska Potatoes
Western Nebraska growers of certified seed potatoes earned too little from last year’s crop. Many plan not to certify seed this year. Acreage may fall by one third to one half. Only about 3,000 acres have applied so far, likely not exceeding 4,000 acres in total. Last year around 6,000 acres were certified.

Seed Potatoes Prices and Seed Shortage Discussed in Kimball
Kimball farmers report seed potatoes priced high as Southern growers seek certified seed. With half the prior crop, costs rise and demand for seed increases. Louisiana reports show seed efficiency, nine sacks of marketable potatoes from one sack of seed, worth about 45 dollars per crop. Local seed buying centers consolidate buying power for communities. Western Nebraska seed remains favored but costs and supply are tightening this year. Kimball County certified seed acreage is about 570 acres, far less than last year.
