Feed Costs Must Be Kept Down in Dairy Farming

Wisconsin scientists report feed costs drain about 60 percent of milk production expenses. The Middle West Soil Improvement Committee urges dairymen to cut costs by growing high quality pasture. Ohio State economists estimate 75 cents worth of nutrients from pasture versus 2 to 3 dollars from corn. A cow can derive 70 to 80 percent of nutrients from pasture and hay with proper grazing. Key steps include nitrogen and potash rich soil, legume-grass mixtures, and effective grazing management.
