County fair wheat show seeks hundreds of entries

Cheyenne County Wheat Growers Association promotes the 1956 county fair wheat show set for August 23 to 25. Entry bags available at the Sidney Chamber of Commerce American National Bank and Sidney National Bank. Sweepstakes and trophies awarded with samples advancing to the Nebraska State Wheat Show in Alliance in October.

County Board Raises Valuations on Two Firms

The county equalization board added 153800 to the total valuation yesterday after reviewing two cases. One firm rose from 110000 to 260000, the other in Dalton increased from 250 to 4050, with no protest and no 50 percent penalty applied. Gish expects final values may drop below last year’s 50 million dollar record.

July Ends On A Moist Note In Sidney Nebraska

July in Sidney Nebraska brought welcome rainfall and cooler than average highs staying under 95 with a top reading of 98. Irrigation kept crops productive while hail losses remained average or below. Total July water pumping neared 90 million gallons, well below last year’s record. Rainfall at Sidney Airport reached 4.59 inches, far above the normal 1.79 inches.

An attempt at organization by Sidney teenage youth is planned for Friday at 7 36 p m in the Sidney Junior High School Band room. All teenage students from Sidney High School and St Patrick s High School are urged to attend. The project is not sponsored by any civic group but is the effort of a group of students to organize a recreational program.

Disregard of Speed Limits Persists in Cheyenne County

In western Nebraska motorists along Highway 30 ignore posted limits as radar enforcement continues. The Cheyenne County judge’s office reports 93 complaints filed by the Nebraska Safety Patrol against speeders from radar checks in late July, a figure consistent with recent patrol totals.

Penalties On Wheat Bring $83 255 Fine

Cheyenne County farmers have paid 83 255.71 in penalties for excess wheat since July 1. Penalties run 1.07 per bushel on the first 24.3 bushels per acre of excess wheat, which must be arranged for before marketing quota cards are issued. Officials note yields were below county averages this year, reducing total penalties from 1955 levels.

Nebraska produced oil and gas were valued at 22,640,648 for Jan 1 to July 1 1956 the highest half year total in state history. The severance tax take was 452 813 68 with 21 828 213 from oil sales and under a million from gas. June tax receipts totaled 76 098.

County Board Near Decision On Courthouse

Cheyenne County commissioners will decide next Tuesday on financing a courthouse addition. Options include a bond issue election or a special mill levy to fund one or two wings, with at least two commissioners favoring a levy up to 14 mills if an addition is built next year.
