Cool fall predicted for state

LINCOLN UP I Arthur a University of Nebraska Lincoln meteorologist today predicted a cool fall in Nebraska with near normal to above normal precipitation. Douglas also predicts another cold winter in the central United States. Normal precipitation, which will be more favorable than last year, can be expected this winter, he added. Douglas said he bases his predictions on the behavior of water temperatures in the Central Pacific Ocean and along the west coast. From such indicators, he said, he can make fairly precise predictions about three months in advance. Forecasts up to six months in advance tend to be less accurate, he said. In addition, Douglas said weather throughout the world is affected by what occurs in ocean waters. The weather in North America is probably influenced by conditions developing eight to 10 months in advance in Antarctica, he said. When we see changes taking place in Antarctica, we can start getting ready for them in North America.
