Appreciation Day and Christmas Bazaar Planned in Sidney

An Appreciation Day featuring a sidewalk sale and a free hamburger lunch is planned for Saturday downtown Sidney. The third annual event is co sponsored by the retail committee and the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. A Christmas in July bazaar by the Ladies Chamber will display Christmas items crafts baked goods plants and white elephant gifts at Powell Hardware Building 917 Illinois from 9am to 5pm. Donations for the bazaar are welcomed. Hamburgers beans chips and soft drinks will be given away between Hickory and Illinois on 10th Street from 11:30 to 1:30 with about 3000 free meals expected.

Officials bring Western Nebraska press group to Sidney meeting

More than 100 advance registrations have been received for Saturdays gathering of the Western District of the Nebraska Press Association in Sidney. Larry Boyer, district president and publisher of The Sidney Telegraph, says educational seminars cover tourism potential and advertising strategy. Highlights include a pig roast at the Sidney Country Club and tours of Fort Sidney Post Commander’s Home.

Sidney Teen Queen crowned in Nebraska pageant

Sidney girl Sandra Kay Noetzelmann is crowned Miss Nebraska Teen Queen in the latest Community and Suburban Press Service issue. Also featured are teen questions, Oktoberfest crafts displays, and Area 7 Class B tourney results with Sidney beating Alliance after a rain delay. Plus slow-pitch softball tourney pairings and an astrology forecast.

Oil from North Slope reaches Valdez ending long pipeline run

Crude oil from the North Slope arrived at Valdez at 4:02 am EDT after an 800 mile trip through the trans Alaska pipeline. Six stoppages occurred due to flaws and human error. Oil supply, estimated at 10 billion barrels, is expected to last into the 21st century.

Cheyenne County Budget Hearing Plans Lower Levy

Frances Craig reports Cheyenne County plans a 1977-78 budget of 1,898,829.65 with a 13.95 mill levy, slight drop from 13.97 last year. Board aims to hold line on taxes as departments report higher overall costs due to valuation increases and fund transfers.

School Board Architects Propose Renovations In Sidney

Sidney Board of Education met with Wilson & Co architects to review upgrade plans for the district. Proposals include reorganizing grades by building and converting North Central South elementary into K-4, with fifth and sixth at Central. Senior High would handle 9-12 with major renovations costing about 24 million. East Ward to be sold. Junior High to take 7th and 8th grades. Other options total 33 to 45 million.

Kidnap victim freed in Chappell by cafe waitress

Laurie Taylor an 18 year old Kansas City Kansas woman escaped after being kidnapped by Paul Forsythe 24 in Kansas City Missouri. She hid in the Chappell Cafe kitchen room after being helped by waitress Mary Lynn Peterson and Police Chief Walter Faustman. Forsythe was taken into custody in Chappell and extradition arranged to Kansas City. The incident followed an armed robbery at a fish and chips shop in Kansas City.
