Sidney City Council approves 1.8 million budget without public input

Sidney approves a 1.881 million dollar budget for 1977-78 with cuts to parks and libraries and increases for streets sanitation fire and golf. The plan raises property tax to 456 306 while the overall levy may adjust after county assessed valuation is certified.

Bike safety day rides into Sidney High field event

Riders of all ages will join a Bicycle Safety Day this Sunday at 1 30 pm on the Sidney High School practice field. Charlene McConnell chairs the event co sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 17 and the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 610. A bicycle rodeo, repair and inspection activities, an information test, Lite A Bike tape, and refreshments are planned with 50 prizes including a grand prize bicycle radio. Volunteers may contact Miss McConnell. Monday Aug 1 is an alternate rain date.

Fair board considers fence plan for grandstands

Cheyenne County Fair Board debated exits and entrances to the new grandstands and postponed a decision until prices on chain link fencing and gates are obtained. Preparations for the 91st annual fair begin, with Aug 19 set as the start. The board approved a Jaycees demolition derby on Sept 11, with receipts to be split between the Jaycees and the fair board.

Sidney Housing Authority OKs water system change order

The Sidney Housing Authority voted 5-0 Tuesday night to approve a change order for Western Heritage construction to install an underground watering system. The cost is about $10,144. Housing director Maxine Whitaker said 43 senior applicants have applied for the 40 units, with Sept. 1 set as the residency target.

Oktoberfest Adds Horseshoe Pitching Event

Cheyenne County Oktoberfest organizers appointed Archie Greenwood as horseshoe event chairman for the Sept 30 to Oct 2 festival. Prizes will be awarded. The committee also added two more big tent booths and discussed T-shirts, entertainers, and craft and food booth participation. A color photo album from 1976 is on display at the Chamber of Commerce. The next public meeting is Aug 9 at 8 p.m.

Larry D Wertz 26 was arrested outside his Elliott Highway home near the damaged Trans Alaska pipeline site. He faces Alaska malicious destruction charges and was jailed in Fairbanks with a 100000 dollar bond awaiting arraignment.

Sidney Council okays parking fines and speed limits

The Sidney City Council on Tuesday night adopted two ordinances raising parking meter fines from 25 cents to one dollar and aligning street speeds with state law while allowing targeted reductions in problem areas. The measures also approve free downtown morning parking during August and a Saturday appreciation event with sidewalk use and a hamburger barbecue.
