Names of McConaughy and Kingsley Honored in Nebraska Waterways
Two South Central Nebraska men Charles W. McConaughy and George P. Kingsley are remembered for irrigation advocacy that led to Lake McConaughy and Kingsley Dam in the North Platte Valley. McConaughy, Holdrege businessman and former mayor, championed diversifying water for farming after observing moisture benefits. Kingsley, a Minden banker, joined in irrigation efforts. They led early regional irrigation groups that evolved into the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District, with McConaughy as president and Kingsley as vice-president in successive organizations formed in 1913 and 1922.
