Quiet Week in Western Nebraska Oil Finds Few Reports

Western Nebraska oil activity slowed with no new discoveries in Kimball and Banner counties for the week ending yesterday. Four field wells were reported, Cheyenne County yielded the notable No 1 Hopkins in Towle Field, and several companies began or continued drilling in Lorenzo and Rohlfing areas with mixed results and plans for further testing.

Miss Fort Sidney Enters Miss Nebraska Pageant

Eighteen year old Rosalie Anne Swanson of Sidney leaves Saturday with her family for Lincoln to compete for the Miss Nebraska crown. She will perform a piano solo Deep Purple in the talent division and faces 11 contestants from Auburn Beatrice Columbus Hastings Fremont Kearney Lincoln Ogallala Omaha and Scottsbluff in the outdoor Congress Inn Motel pageant.

First Kimball polio case reported in county

A 27 year old man named Gene Bymer is Kimball County’s first polio case of the year. He has suffered some paralysis with extent not yet known and was confirmed Wednesday. Bymer had not received polio inoculations and urged others to get shots and boosters. He remains at Kimball County Hospital.

Prices Reduced for Panhandle Plays Next Week

Panhandle Players stage two one act plays Friday July 31 at the Junior High School Auditorium as a bonus production. The Old Lady Shows Her Medals and Man in the Bowler Hat run 8 15 pm with tickets at 75 cents adults 35 cents students. Season ticket holders admitted free with other tickets. Firefighters Put Out Grass Fire at Country Club Heights

No damage reported after volunteers extinguish a grass fire at Country Club Heights around 10 15 this morning. Firefighters believe the blaze likely started from a trash fire started by someone.

Peruvians Praise Great Plains Wheat Amid Trade Talks

A six man Peruvian wheat team visits Western Nebraska as part of a farmer program to study Great Plains hard red winter wheat. Officials note Peru may order based on Peru-US agreements, while Peruvians and U S officials seek to expand markets and improve quality for future shipments. Local turnout was small at the Fort Sidney Hotel but the group called the dinner meeting enjoyable.

Nebraska and Panhandle farmers vote on wheat quotas in 1940s

In Cheyenne Banner and Kimball counties light turnout backed local rejection of the wheat marketing quota. Nationally about 80 percent of farmers approved continuation of federal controls, with Nebraska at 73.8 percent yes. Turnout varied by county. Kimball and Banner counties showed decisive opposition while Scotts Bluff Morrill Box Butte and Sioux supported the quotas.

Three-Vehicle Sideswipe Northeast of Lodgepole

A three vehicle crash on Highway 30 about 3 10 p m near Lodgepole left minor damage totals of roughly 200 to the state truck 350 to the Hindman car and 75 to the Phillips auto. A 22 month old in the Hindman vehicle suffered a bruise but no serious injuries.

Gas Odor Suspect Siphoner Linked to Hardy Apartments

Police theorize a gasoline odor near the Hardy Apartments came from a siphoner rather than arson. Tenants reported smelling gas after midnight and one witness saw a man with a can. Officers believe the intruder sought gasoline from parked cars in the area.

Damage Heavy In Slowing Mishap Near Potter

Two teenagers escaped serious injuries after a collision east of Potter when Larry D Dreston 16 of Bynumbille Mo struck the rear of Alice A Mueller 16 Route 1 Kimball Mo as she slowed. Damage was estimated at 650 dollars for the Dreston car and 300 to 400 dollars for the Mueller car.

State VFW Meet Dates Announced in Nebraska

Dates for the Nebraska Veterans of Foreign Wars Fall Conference are set for October 17 18 with headquarters at the city auditorium and the Ft Sidney Motor Hotel in Sidney. A national VFW representative is sought for the featured banquet speaker and schools of instruction will be held. An organizational convention committee meeting by the Sidney post and auxiliary is scheduled for August 4 in Lincoln Grand Island.
