Food Lockers Rise Across United States in 1948
Economists report frozen food locker plants in the United States grew from 200 in 1935 to about 11,000 in 1948. Most plants were in the North Central states, housing 2.5 million lockers. Farmers were the main customers, renting about two thirds, with town residents making up the rest. Locker operations are usually small and independent, often attached to meat markets or grocery stores, and many are joint ventures. Meat products dominate storage, while processing and slaughtering services are key offerings.
