Weekend rains slowed harvest in southern Cheyenne County after cutting began Friday. Monday's clear skies brought optimism as farmers planned to resume field work today and later in the week in the Potter Gurley Dalton area.
Extension plant pathologist John L. Weshing says dark spots on wheat heads are mostly a mold attacking already ripened chaff, not a disease. Basal glume blotch may darken the kernel base under wet conditions, but dry weather halts development. Yields vary across areas with Pot ter, Lorenzo, and Peetz reporting mixed results and hail impact.
A cooperative hotel drive luncheon described the Broken Bow hotel as a successful operation with seven percent dividends over twenty years. It highlighted 72 rooms with about 80 percent occupancy, room rates of 1.65 to 2.75, and a coffee shop. The meeting reported $61,100 in sales and commended top teams. First list of subscribers and kickoff dinner details followed, with numerous local names and businesses listed.

H G Spearow as Cheyenne County Savings Bond Committee chair announces six month U S Defense Bond sales totaling 265 077 50 in Cheyenne County. Leland R Hall, state director, reports Nebraska total sales for the period at 37 129 545 60 with over 69 percent in Series E Bonds. He says the Peoples Bond remains popular as Nebraskans build financial reserves for future need. At the current pace, eighteen counties may exceed one million dollars in sales this year, with twenty more likely to join. He notes defense remains a national priority regardless of Korea War outcome.
The county fair wheat division will crown the Cheyenne County Wheat King at the annual Wheat Show. The champion receives a trophy from Farmers Union Gas and Oil Co-Op of Sidney Lodgepole and Potter, with purple ribbons for the winner and two runners up.

The Ohio Oil Co. moves a drilling rig back into the Dorman field after an unsuccessful Perkins County wildcat near Grant. The Dorman No. 10 is nearing completion in the first Dakota sand, while a new Elsasser A-2 well is planned on Section 24-14-50. Ohio maintains two producers on the north half and a completed well on the south half belonging to Sidney residents Fred Beyer and John Elsasser.
Walt Shrum and his Colorado Hillbillies bring a forty minute hillbilly show to the Fox Theatre alongside regular film bookings. The act, familiar to western fans from Gene Autry and Roy Rogers pictures, features a talented cast and a mix of music and humor for attendees.
Mr and Mrs W W Wise of Lodgepole celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary with an Open House at their home in Lodgepole on Sunday July 29 from two to five in the afternoon.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Oliverius Sr longtime Cheyenne county residents celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary with a family gathering at 804 Maple Street on Thursday July 5. He is 82 she 81 they wed in Chicago in 1891 later homesteaded south of Sunol before moving to Sidney to live with daughter Mrs Oldenburg. They have seven children five living including Mrs Oldenburg Joseph Jr Charles Frank and Mrs Gordon Hahne with several grandchildren and great grandchildren present. Congratulatory messages and gifts arrived from friends.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars club was robbed at dawn, about eight o'clock found by the cleaning lady. Entry was gained through a rear door pried open. Police Chief Sol Willis and Cheyenne County Sheriff W W Schulz reported no leads. About $800 in cash disappeared.
An elderly woman previously reported as a former mental hospital patient was found in Sidney last week after leaving Joliet Illinois. Sheriff W W Schulz escorted Frances Tomac back to Joliet custody of her children. On the trip home he stopped in Omaha to address a separate case, where Robert Lewis faced charges for defrauding an innkeeper, was fined five dollars plus costs, and ordered to repay a 42.20 dollar hotel bill.
Since North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel on June 25 1950 preliminary peace talks began to end the Korean War today. United Nations forces have fought for 379 days. GIs are wary of the Russian bid while South Koreans show disappointment at the 38th parallel as a northern boundary. Official South Korean stance mirrors UN troops and is unpalatable to many Americans.
A Wisconsin family escaped serious injury when their 1939 DeSoto was demolished after a collision with a 1950 Ford truck on Highway 30 near Lodgepole. Philip Montgomery, 23, his wife, and their 18 month old daughter were in the car. the child was thrown from the vehicle and Montgomery sustained injuries while Mrs Montgomery and the baby required only minor shock. In a separate early crash, Raymond Driscoll’s 23 year old Sterling driver’s car collided with gravel, rolled and damaged the car heavily, while 18 month old Sandra Kay Driscoll sustained facial injuries and her mother minor cuts. Weekend incidents reported by Cheyenne County Sheriff’s office.
Kimball residents pressed Gov. Val Peterson to preserve or closely route Highway 30 through Kimball, protesting a bypass plan under study since 1945. State highway official R F Weller noted federal authorities find the Kimball segment adequate.
George Cook his wife and mother were bitten by their own small cocker puppy on July 13 near Northport. A rabies test returned positive from the state laboratory at Lincoln sending word to Dr W J Brandt who destroyed the dog and notified the Cooks and their physician.
