Wheat Checks Going Out First 64 Payment Ready This Week

The first payments of wheat marketing certificates under the 1964 program will be sent this week to Cheyenne County farmers. Estimated total payments in the county are about 1.4 million dollars, with checks going out in the latter part of the week.

Large Wheat Harvest Pushes On Across Cheyenne County

Dry warm weather drives the winter wheat harvest with combines working through the night in Cheyenne County. Yields range 18 to 45 bushels per acre, averaging around 30, with overall quality and weight high though protein is below ideal. Locations ‎Chappell, Lodgepole, Sunol, Colton, Sidney, Lorenzo, Peetz, Gurley, Dalton, Potter, Bushnell report strong progress and good runs, with several areas near completion by weekend if conditions hold.

Derby Day Band to Perform at Soap Box Derby

Sidney High band director Duane Johnson announced a 22 member group to provide music for Sundays derby race plus pre race activities. The Sidney National Guard and Platte Valley Custom Club will support clinics racer inspections transport. Further details to follow.

Colorado Man Killed In Head On Car Truck Crash

Cheyenne County records a third traffic death of the year as 68 year old Forrest Elias Applegit of Crook dies in a head on collision seven miles south of Colton. A northbound blue Cadillac or Buick driven at high speed caused blinding dust. Applegit’s 1954 Mercury died on impact. Witnesses and investigators from the county attorney to the safety patrol described extensive damage, with Applegit not wearing a seat belt. His survivors include widow Anna and a daughter Betty, with rites pending in Sterling.

Mill Levies Near Legal Limits In Sidney Budget

Sidney’s mill levies remain below legal caps for general operations and parks with cemetery and library funds forecast within limits in 1964 65. Street lighting uses the single one mill levy at the legal limit, a pass through to self. General operations total 9 884 mills, parks 2 178, library 1 488.

Ladies' Lounge Opens Saturdays at Cheyenne County Courthouse

The ladies lounge in the Cheyenne County courthouse will stay open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. a matron will be present. The space was renovated by the Sidney Business and Professional Women's Club city and county with new paint furnishings drapes a library table and other items. The BPW plans to slip cover the furniture and install a sign to guide visitors.

City Manager Convention Opens Friday in Sidney

The City Managers of Nebraska will hold their annual meeting in Sidney Friday and Saturday with ten managers or representatives and their wives expected. Activities include a business session, a Friday dinner at Dude's Steak House, and a Saturday schedule with breakfast, a Sioux Army Depot tour, golf, and a luncheon at S A D before adjournment. Participating cities include Alliance Scottsbluff Sidney Chadron Ogallala Lexington Valentine Gordon Kearney and Grand Island.

Rites set for Mrs Martinosky in Sidney

Mrs John W Martinosky Sr 93 died after months long illness in Fullerton California. Services planned for Saturday at St Patrick's Church Sidney with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include son John W Martinosky Jr sister Matilda Kilwerter and brothers George and Robert Loebe and grandson Michael Ray Martinosky.

Frontier seeks cut to wasteful Denver Sidney shuttle

Frontier Airlines asked the Civil Aeronautics Board to end its DC-3 shuttle between Denver and Sidney and North Platte due to an average daily load of 3.3 passengers over a year. The airline says elimination would save 8787 dollars annually and proposes routing Sidney service via its southern Nebraska corridor to Lincoln and Omaha.

Last Inspection Of Derby Racers Is Set Tomorrow

Final inspection before the 1964 Soap Box Derby is scheduled for Thursday at the National Guard Armory. Twenty one cars passed the initial check and are impounded until Derby time, while 29 others needing minor corrections will be impounded after the Thursday inspection. The Derby begins at 1 p.m. on City Route 19 south of Sidney with early hill tests at 9 a.m. for boy entrants.

Early Collision On Highway 385 Near Dalton

Miss Linda M. Bruntz of Bridgeport, 18, drove a 1960 Ford and struck a bridge railing after reportedly falling asleep at the wheel. The single-vehicle wreck occurred at 3:15 a.m. on Highway 385 three tenths of a mile south of Dalton, causing about 350 dollars in damage with no injuries reported by Trooper John Trenerry of the Nebraska Safety Patrol.

New Extension Agent Del Rae Beermann Begins Work

Del Rae Beermann starts today as Cheyenne County Home Extension Agent after a spring degree in home economics from the University of Nebraska. A Dakota City native, she completed five months of extension training in Fremont and will begin duties with Dodge County, active in campus groups Omicron Nu and Phi Upsilon Omicron. She presides over pre-Fair work and will lead the 4-H practice demonstration day at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the 4-H building.

Chain Reaction Accident Wrecks Three Vehicles

A chain reaction crash at the Illinois and 13th Avenue intersection at 5 48 p m involved Blanche Mann 82 of Sidney running a red light and injuring a passenger in James Turner 21 of Illinois. Turners car struck Koehn 20 of Sidney causing about 1000 damage to the Turner vehicle and 150 to others. Mrs Turner was treated at Memorial Hospital for minor injuries. Mrs Mann appeared in police court with a judge urging a driver’s examination.

Plant diseases to be checked by visiting expert in Sidney

Dr. David Wyson plant pathologist at the College of Agriculture will inspect diseases of plants and shrubs Friday morning in Sidney. He was to be here July 23. County Agent Ivan Liljegren asks residents with diseased plant specimens to bring them to the extension office by noon that day.

Burial Set for Marvin D. Armstrong Today

Sidney friends were saddened by the death Sunday in Denver of Marvin D. Armstrong 60 former Sidney resident. Graveside services to be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Fairview Cemetery Scottsbluff with Rev. Glenn Marshall officiating. The Benson Jolliffe Funeral Home in charge. Armstrong had worked as a book keeper in Sidney for many years at Kokjer Chevrolet Gibson Motor Co and Halvorson Larabee before moving to Denver. A detailed obituary will appear Friday.
