Farm women rally sways Iowa beef strike talks
Panhandle women trekked to Sioux City Iowa last Thursday aiding negotiations between Iowa Beef Processors and the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. Eddie Collins credits the trip with delaying the strike two weeks and bringing a mediator to the scene. He notes plans for workers wives to join at Dakota City, potential $30,000 in combined wages, and a long disputed boxed beef issue as central to the dispute. Collins warns a prolonged stoppage could harm ranchers dealers and farmers. IBP Dakota City plant employs 2,600, slaughters 80,000 weekly, with about $6 per head profit. Collins calls union leaders largely profit‑driven.
