Chappell Man Killed in Highway 30 Crash After Police Chase
A 19 year old Chappell man identified as Joe Hernandez died early Saturday when his 1969 Oldsmobile rammed a utility pole after a pursuit with Chappell police on Highway 30 west of Chappell. Three passengers, Ruben Gutierrez 16 Lupe Gutierrez 17 and Larry Alvarez 16, were treated for minor injuries at Julesburg hospital and released. The driver reportedly sped up after police activated red lights and attempted to pass another eastbound vehicle, losing control and colliding with a borrow pit and the utility pole worth about 175 dollars. The incident remains under investigation by state patrol troopers.
