Western Nebraska farm women fly to rally at Sioux City

A group of 42 Panhandle farm women from Western Nebraska flew to Sioux City Iowa on Thursday for a rally protesting Towa Beef Processors proposed strike. About one fourth of the rally crowd rode the plane from Sidney and Scottsbluff. Organizers praised Eddie Collins for arranging the trip and said union leaders agreed to consider allowing two women to attend negotiations. The flight was described as educational for both the Nebraska women and labor leaders.

Heaton Ends Long Judicial Tenure as County Judge

Longtime 19th Judicial District judge P J Heaton adjourned the county court for the last time at 4 34 p m after swearing in successor Tom Dorwart. Dorwart praised Heaton’s cooperation as he assumed the bench, while Heaton reflected on his four years of service and hinted at possible future appointment by the Nebraska Supreme Court.

Two arraigned in Skiba murder case

A brother and sister from Ohio and California were arraigned in Cheyenne County Court on charges of robbery and first degree murder in the death of Fred Skiba near Sidney. Jerry Simpson, 20, and Jacqueline Simpson, 23, face possible penalties from three to 50 years. bond set at 100000 each. Preliminary hearing set later to determine probable cause. Skiba’s body was found off I-80 west of Sidney. the suspects arrived by plane from the Los Angeles area.
