Editorial Keep Them on the Tax Rolls in Lancaster County
The Lancaster county issue centers on taxing Loup River and Eastern Nebraska public power districts. Intervening taxpayers led by Guy Chambers press to tax district property, arguing they are not state or governmental subdivisions. They warn that privatized power assets moving to public districts could slash tax revenue for Lincoln, the school system, and local government, urging immediate assessment to cover lost taxes. The piece urges taxpayers to act to ensure districts pay a fair share if operated for profit, and notes a broader need to address tax-free properties supporting government-financed districts. It closes by asserting the paper's role in provoking thought and inviting reader responses.
