Cheyenne County farmers in the 1939 federal farm program are eligible for soil-building payments. The payments supplement other conservation and price-adjustment aids, with alfalfa seedings earning two units per acre. The maximum payment is a computed total from cropland, commercial orchards, noncrop pasture, and grazing capacity, with one unit per $1.50 in the allowance.
Nebraskans will receive first unemployment checks this week as 12,710 initial claims were filed by January 21. Eligible claimants who filed on January 3 sign first pay order cards at State Employment Service offices, with checks issued from the State Treasurer and mailed after processing. Nebraska acted as agent in forwarding 179 initial and 622 continued claims to other states.
The Dalton Presbyterian church dedicates a new two floor wing on Sunday January 29 at 2 15 pm to house its religious education program. Dr J W Pressly from Omaha will deliver the dedicatory address with Rev George Bancroft of Scottsbluff delivering greetings from the Synod of Nebraska. Assisting ministers are Rev John Rhine Gurley and Rev Howard Osborne Bridgeport. The addition costing about 4200 dollars was started October 3 and will serve church school activities. The vested choir of eighteen voices will provide music and visitors from Sidney and nearby areas are welcomed.
A Cheyenne County treasury report shows a December 31 balance of 37 207 99 across fifteen funds all not in the red. Largest fund is County high school at 14 538 71 while County Fair stands at 36 39 with general fund 3 328 79, indicating sound finances despite hard times.
A new drilling effort will target highly porous sands 6500 to 7500 feet deep near the Buckley No 1 oil test in Sioux County. Geologic findings link the Agate anticline area to the Powder River basin in Wyoming and the neighboring Nebraska Panhandle formation, guiding the prospect.
Mitchell, the western Nebraska basketball power, saw its three season win streak end with a 23 to 19 defeat at Kimball. The Tigers opened cold, scoring their first field goal five minutes after the second quarter began as Kimball pulled away with early quick scoring. In other western games, Minatare upset Oshkosh 33 to 31, Ray Maley’s McGrew team beat Henry 43 to 16, and York routed Alliance 28 to 18.
An overheated stove in Campbell's Cafe kitchen caused minor damage early Tuesday. The Sidney volunteer fire department contained the blaze with chemicals after it burned through the kitchen ceiling. W G Campbell Jr attributed the fire to a stove left on for the day, marking a second mishap in a week. chef Russell Fee recently suffered a badly burned foot from hot grease.
All turkey growers who marketed turkeys through the local unit of the North Platte Valley Poultry Marketing association are to meet in the district court room in Sidney on Saturday afternoon, January 28, at 1 30 o clock. Directors and officers will be elected for the coming year. Local growers shipped 14984 pounds of dressed turkeys to eastern markets in Novem ber December and January shipments. Advances at the loading station totaled 2572 87 for the three shipments. Sales reports from Cheyenne County birds indicate a very satisfactory price.
By Wednesday noon, 1407 auto license receipts had been issued by the county treasurer. About 3500 vehicles remain to be licensed. Receipts run ahead of last year, but with less than half licensed, a last minute rush is anticipated starting Saturday. Deadlines set for February 1 require plates by Tuesday evening to avoid arrest. Farmers and other truck owners often delay licensing until their vehicles are in use.
Nebraska and Cheyenne County reached a plan to extend the Potter feeder road north of Potter after bids came in well under the available funds. Cheyenne County will cover surveying and related costs while about $7,000 from the earmarked fund will fund additional improvements, using the remaining $6,891 from bids.
The President's Ball at the city auditorium on Monday night is expected to draw a large crowd. Advance tickets near 100, with box office sales open for more. Half of net proceeds stay in the county for charitable cases. a citizen committee decides expenditures. Hank Barker and his Band play. Miriam Schneider of Cheyenne appears as an acrobatic entertainer. Two testimonials praise her as top notch. Dance tickets cost 1.00 tax exempt. spectator tickets 25 cents. couples can enter on one ticket.
In the 1890s Nebraska droughts, Frontier County officials failed to aid farmers, who instead rallied neighbors and donated through Rev. J. F. Green. The treasured 1894 Frontier County aid certificate shows 5400 in funds, appointing Green as aid solicitor to gather help from nearby areas, with endorsements from three county commissioners.
The Nebraska Automobile Dealers Association backs reducing tow fees and aligning laws with other states. They urge Sen. A. L. Miller to ease barriers that hinder free traffic across state lines, arguing Nebraska should cash in on through traffic rather than deter it. Aiming to preserve the edition, staff will place one copy in the public library after selling 160 copies so far.
O. J. Weymouth principal of the senior high school spoke to the Lions club about the various isms of today and traced America s position in the world. The talk sparked an informal, thoughtful discussion among members during the Wednesday noon gathering.
A Saturday evening Alliance city auditorium concert features a 110 piece ensemble drawn from Alliance, Scottsbluff, and Sidney high school bands. Directors include Vallette Hill, James Johnston, and Julius Cochran with guest instructors Norman Smith and Prof. Leffingwell. Sidney performers to participate are listed.
The Telegraph advertises two public farm sales. Frank Halsey will sell on Wednesday February 1 eight miles northwest of Lodge Pole with 15 cattle 45 bred black face ewes and farm equipment. The sale begins at 10 a.m. Auctioneers Jim Martin Paul Dillehay and clerk The American National Bank. L A Reynolds plans a sale Tuesday January 31 twenty miles south of Lodge Pole on the east road at 11 a.m. Auctioneer George Frickey and clerk The First State Bank Lodge Pole.
The chamber of commerce thermometer used to show 1939 membership progress will reappear in Greenlees' west window early next week. The goal is 100 members with completion by February 6. Ivan Nelson prepared the thermometer and Greenlees donated the window space. The drive has few refusals and about half the list is covered. more outreach will continue Monday and Tuesday.
Three youths including Samuel T. Jones a former Sid ney resident are jailed in Greeley Colorado charged with the hit and run death of 47 year old Claude Perkins of Cheyenne last Sunday morning. Jones admitted driving the car and said Paul Dumbleton and Dale Edmonds rode in the back seat. If convicted they face up to fourteen years in prison.

Relief workers with buckets and cleaning solution wash the county court house interior after a decade of dirt. Workers remove grime from walls ceilings pillars and stairways. The campaign inspires office staff to tidy desks cabinets and equipment for a spic and span finish.
Greenlees annual January clearance sale opens this morning with special values in every department. A full page advertisement appears in this paper and three thousand circulars were mailed to residents of the Sidney trade territory. Sale items are listed for many but not all goods, with convenient display arrangements to aid shopping. The sale runs through February 4.
The Sidney chamber of commerce reports progress on the Denver Black Hills Highway upgrade. Nebraska and Colorado plan oiling of the remaining unsurfaced stretches this year, marking a twelve year effort by the Sidney civic club. Surveys for a new route are expected in February with bids to follow if approved by the state highway departments.
Cheyenne County farmers may boost tree planting under the 1939 farm program earning up to seven soil building credits per acre. Five credits reward planting protecting and cultivating 300 trees per acre for windbreaks, with two more credits for maintaining 300 trees per acre planted between July 1935 and July 1 1939. Clarke McNary trees qualify for full credit.
State highway department will take bids February 16 on an estimated 168000 dollar package for 19 road projects. Funds come from state construction 66500 regular aid 49500 federal aid secondary 9500 and federal aid to grade crossing 500 plus about 42000 state maintenance funds. Major projects include 8.4 miles on highway 275 between Clearwater and Neligh Antelope county and 7.3 miles on highway 19 between Chadron and Alliance in Dawes county with roadside improvement.
