Membership Drive Opened By Chamber of Commerce
The chamber of commerce opened its membership drive this week with strong early results. Wookey chairs the drive and heads a committee with A E Wright E E White Dan Campbell. Additional workers Ackerman Barstow Jones Lowe urged to wrap up efforts before the next meeting on January 23. A list of 154 prospects was handed to Wookey as the drive aims to reach at least 100 paid members. Last year the group had 82 members, and plans for irrigation promotion and trade promotion include expanded sales days.

George E. Foster Dies at 77 with burial today
George Edgar Foster 77 died in a local hospital Tuesday after three years of ill health. A Virden Illinois native born November 4 1861 he married Cecilia Moor February 10 1885 and later homesteaded in Kansas Nebraska and Cheyenne county. He was a charter member of the local Christian church and farmed all his life until retirement. Survivors include his widow Cecilia J Foster of Sidney and one son.

Fair Crowd Attends Dance at City Auditorium Night

The Sidney Rifle club posts nineteen wins and three losses this season after beating seven of eight opponents in recent competition. Individual scores include Mathews 287 Pierson 279 Doran 278 Kahler 276 and Bieternitz 276. The club defeated Belle City Racine Norwich Columbus Oswego Cresco in postal matches while losing to Rochester. This week opens the State Association schedule with Sidney facing Fullerton, last year’s State Champion.

Colorful Life Ends For Mary Connally Frontier settler of Lindsay and Dalton
Mrs Mary Connally died Tuesday at 82. Born in Brooklyn in 1856 she came to Nebraska in 1860 with her family, settling at Brady Island where her father worked on railroad construction. She and her husband William A Connally helped found Lindsay and later lived near Dalton before moving to Sidney with her granddaughters. The obituary notes a frontier life marked by tragedy and pioneer spirit.

Fire originating from a cook stove or furnace caused extensive damage to the Henry Johnson residence. German Taxes Consume Most of $100000 Estate
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schwanger of Long Beach California told in Sidney how German taxes took all but $9000 of a $100000 estate left by Mrs Schwanger’s parents. They traveled from Germany to settle the estate and reported confiscation under the Hitler regime. Armament factories run day and night while other industries lag, they said.

Drilling Presses On At West Plains Oil Test In Cold
Drilling continues at the West Plains oil test thirty miles southwest of Peetz despite cold weather and poor roads. By today drilling should reach about 60 feet with 18 inch surface casing to handle surface water strata. Delays occurred after a truck strike blocked casing and supplies but a load arrived this week. The test rests on geologists R D George of Boulder and the late Charles T Lupton of Denver, whose surveys suggest oil deposits. Local investors from Sidney Potter Kimball area back the project, with Leo E. Osborn coordinating leases and contracts for a fair test. Additional slowdowns noted on the Selleck ranch north of Broadwater due to weather.

County Board Cancels Building Insurance at Fairgrounds
The county commissioners unanimously canceled insurance on fair grounds buildings after a fair board recommendation. Premiums run 500 to 600 dollars yearly, and the board prefers the county carry its own risk to fund future expansion, hoping no loss occurs. Byron Leonard Observed After Train Collision
Byron Leonard, driver of a car struck by the Union Pacific Forty Niner at the 10th Avenue crossing, was taken to Roche hospital for observation after a painful back swelling developed. Dr. R. E. Roche said the condition is not believed dangerous but monitoring continues to define the injury. The car was badly demolished. Leonard initially believed he was not seriously hurt.

A ticket sale for the annual President's Ball at the city auditorium on January 30 has been reported a success by ticket chairman Ernest Worden and general chairman W LeRoy Larson. Half of the net proceeds stay in Cheyenne county for orthopedic cases and the other half goes to the Warm Springs Georgia foundation for infantile paralysis. Marian Schneider, a Cheyenne acrobatic dancer, is booked for the evening. Her act drew crowds in Denver and her appearance in Sidney will add expense but attract spectators seeking a showsome event.

Mrs Sprenger Dies After Long Illness
Christine Joan Sprenger, 87, longtime Cheyenne County resident since 1908, died Tuesday at her daughter’s home near Sidney after a long illness. Born in Germany in 183? and emigrating in 1870, she married Karl Sprenger and lived in Cincinnati before settling in Beloit, Kansas, then Cheyenne County. Funeral services were held at St. Pa Lutheran Church with Rev. Foroh officiating. Burial in Beloit follows, Rice Funeral Home oversaw arrangements. Survived by four sons Louis of Akron Iowa Edward Beloit Alfred Karl.

Prominent Lodge Pole Citizen Dies After Hospital Stay
J N Isley of the Lodge Pole community died last Sunday evening at an Oshkosh hospital where he had undergone an operation. He had been in failing health and was brought to the hospital Friday for treatment. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Lodge Pole Methodist church. Interment will be in the Lodge Pole cemetery.
