Ag Outlook Not Bright
The agricultural department warned the 1951 crop outlook is not as favorable as needed to meet government production goals. Despite some favorable factors, such as large winter wheat sowing, shortages of soil moisture and irrigation water, freeze damage, labor loss to the armed services, and potential parts shortages threaten production for defense. Dry conditions in the central plains and sparse precipitation left topsoil thirsty, though recovery hinges on rain or snow. Milk output for December reached 8.49 billion pounds, up from 8.38 billion the prior year.
