City Council authorized an engineering survey of the electric utility system to assess current and future needs. Councilman Jack H. Lowe pushed for a comprehensive plan covering generation, distribution, and street lighting upgrades amid a growing city demand and aging infrastructure.
Bill Glassford, famed Nebraska football coach with a record setting season, will address Sidney Rotary Club at the annual athletic banquet honoring Sidney High and St. Patrick's Academy athletes on Thursday night January 16. Limited tickets available from W. P. Ackerman Rae's Sporting Goods Sidney Clothing Alvin Duis Studio or Jack H. Lows. Non members may attend. coaches and stars from other western Nebraska schools are invited.
The Sidney City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance No. 379 to forbid roofing basement structures intended for living or business use. They noted ongoing basement dwellings from war era approvals, with many unfinished. Planning staff will pursue a uniform building code and subdivision controls, while FHA land planners from Chicago and Omaha visit January 15 to discuss coordination. Rezoning recommendations were approved and a public hearing set for February 12.
Charles W Richards, longtime Sidney barber, died Monday at his Longview Washington home. Funeral services set for Thursday in Longview. Survived by wife Hazel three daughters Mrs Ralph Eichenberger of Kimball Mrs Genevieve Bischof Lincoln and Patricia of Longview three sons William in the Navy in Japan John and Robert of Longview.
Three bandits robbed the Fron tier Refining Co service station at Kimball of 330 Sunday morning, according to Sgt Leo Knudtson of Scotts bluff, criminal investigator for the Safety Patrol.
Effective at once, left turns will be banned at the corner of Tenth Avenue and Illinois Street to reduce congestion and speed traffic. City crews installed signs to warn motorists and eliminate a traffic hazard and bottlenecks two or three blocks long. Plans to forbid right or left turns on Saturday nights may follow.
The D. C. State Chamber of Commerce approves a 40 percent dues increase to fund seven new civic activities for 1950 and 1951. Members mostly respond with satisfaction as the revised program adds hotel, road signage, promotions, and publicity efforts. Secretary Gordon Tobin outlines each project’s purpose. J. C. Bush was elected president of Sidney Country Club at the annual stockholders meeting. George Fleming named vice president and Milton Handsel secretary treasurer. Directors elected include Robert Clark Elmer Ladine Harry Marsh M L Merritt and Dr Jason Roche. Dues set for residents and women. stepped up entertainment planned.
Sidney council of churchwomen holds a special meeting today to plan the annual World Day of Prayer observance on Friday February 9. Officers and leaders will finalize program details to be announced later as part of the year’s church activities.
Western Nebraska oil exploration shifts to Dalton as Fog No. 1 looks like a commercial prod. Sinclair Gas and Oil plans immediate tests on adjacent leases and may move onto Munshaw land east of Hugh Foy farm. Foy well projected 50 to 100 barrels daily with offset drilling planned if successful amid ongoing lease disputes and winter drilling patterns.
Cheyenne County Selective Service office will stay open all day Monday January 15 from 8 am to 5 pm to register county doctors as required by Public Law 779 81st Congress. Doctors under 50 with medical dental or veterinary degrees must register with exemptions for certain military and civil positions. Call-ups of under 50 doctors will be slower and done individually, placed in reserve, and only inducted after the state draft advisory committee reviews possible community hardships.
Seven hundred Sidney voters approved a 276000 dollar school bond by about ten to one. Unofficial ward results showed 629 Yes to 78 No, with North 77 Yes 17 No East 111 Yes 15 No West 441 Yes 46 No. Bond funds will finance a new Linden Street building with ten classrooms for K through sixth grade. construction to begin after bids in March and complete by September.
The Sidney Business and Professional Women's Club reviewed its 1950 program Monday. The Annual Inventory outlined projects for the coming year and noted the club’s civic work including Youth Center sponsorship, Cheyenne County X-ray Mobile Unit, Christmas Seal Sale, March of Dimes support, Kings Daughters, and highway signs. The next meeting January 22 will feature the annual membership participation program led by chair Verna Robinson.
Sidney Mayor H. E. Pierson urges all residents to back the 1951 March of Dimes January 15 to 31. He notes 1949-50 polio care costs reached $47,000,000, draining the epidemic aid fund of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and stresses the drive is essential to continue care and research.

Initial meeting discussed activities and an advertising program to explain co op aims to the public and correct misunderstandings.
The State of Nebraska v George E Slaughter Alliance endured a lengthy hearing over the Halloween liquor store robbery in Dalton. Slaughter denies involvement though witnesses testified, with jurors and observers from Alliance among the players as the trial extended into press time.
The Cheyenne County Educators club will hold its mid winter meeting next Monday at 7 30 p m in Lodgepole High School. Vergal Winn county delegate to the Lincoln assembly will report. The club includes all county schools and meets three times yearly.
County Campaign Director John W. Martinosky urged Cheyenne County residents to back the 1951 March of Dimes starting Monday for a two week drive. He highlighted polio cases in 1948 to 1950 and stressed funding for patient care, research, and professional education to prevent and cure polio.
The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department launches its annual drive in about two weeks with an advance sale of tickets for the Valentine dance set for Thursday February 15. Proceeds fund refreshments, fire school delegates, and other department needs. donations are welcome for those not purchasing tickets. Verne Wilson and his orchestra will provide the music for the ball.
