Free Trees For Box Butte Thru Project

Box Butte county farmers may have 1000 acres of trees planted and cared for until June 30 under an Alliance demonstration project part of the Canada to Texas shelter belt program. The effort shifts boundaries about 100 miles east, with the Box Butte farm bureau arranging the setup to test trees in a barren area once marked by failed homestead tree claims. Drouth, fires, neglect and cattle hindered earlier efforts, though Jules Sandoz showed fruit trees could grow on the Mirage flats along the Niobrara and in the sandhills.
