The Sidney city council and the school board discuss a possible trade of the old Central school location for two blocks north of the senior high. Mayor Roche supports the idea though the deal remains uncertain with cash offers on the table and the board weighing better options. The trade may continue to be considered as negotiations proceed.
The Sidney chamber of commerce supports a delinquent tax collection push. County commissioners have laid groundwork for distress warrants to recover part of the roughly $90,000 in delinquent taxes, with personal taxes possibly totaling $50,000. Real estate tax collection plans remain unsettled due to complexity and need for careful countywide cooperation. Nebraska counties, including Scotts Bluff, are adopting similar drives with municipal, school, and county units uniting to pursue delinquencies.
On motion of Dr A L Miller of Kimball the miscellaneous subjects committee voted 6 to 0 to kill Senator Comstock s mercy death bill after a brief hearing Tuesday afternoon Chief spokesman for the bill was Dr Inez C Philbrick of Lincoln who argued in favor and urged Nebraska to lead in legalizing euthanasia for incurably diseased adults
Lillian Elifsen, a West Englewood maid born in the United States, learned she inherited 600000 dollars from her foster father in Norway after visiting New York. She plans to keep her job until the fortune is officially turned over. Her family name is Petersen and she was adopted by a Norwegian shipbuilder at age two.
Ber Rezanina, 18, was injured when he fell from a 20 foot ladder while repairing a windmill. He sustained a fractured vertebrae and fractures of the thigh and arm, with a severe shock and high fever complicating his condition. An ambulance was summoned to sidney and Dr. R. E. Roche noted no serious internal injuries.
Bridgeport won the three team rifle match with 1,383 points, followed by Sidney with 1,367 and Sterling with 1,357. Top scorers included Bridgeport's Palmer and Doran from Sidney, plus Sterling's Breneke and Horner in the prone, sitting, and standing events.

Henry A. Krumm retires from the Sidney market business on March 1 and moves to North Platte to join Flicker Brothers Packing Co. The firm will be incorporated and enlarged to manufacture and job meat products. Succeeding him will be H. R. Logan as market manager and Howard Rallens in charge of groceries. Logan takes over March 1. the new market will be the S. K. Vogler market.
A Nebraska Legislature resolution by Dr. A L Miller Kimball and six other senators calls for a five member investigative committee and a 3500 dollar appropriation to audit the state department of roads and irrigation. It ties to LB 158 gas tax issues and seeks full disclosure of expenditures since 1931 with hearings to be held on the matter.
The Business and Professional Women's group hosts a joint meeting at the country club with Blanche Curtis presiding. Attorney P. J. Heaton delivers the main address on Americanism, praised by listeners. Club heads outline aims and the B and P W plan on vocational guidance offered to local seniors.
Senator Schultz of Elgin backed a bill to remove indigent insane care costs from county taxes. It passed 31 to 7. The measure requires the state board of control to report yearly counts of patients in four state hospitals and total care costs to determine county tax needs. Opponents included Murphy Kimball Miller Dunn Warner Strong Johnson Knickrehm.
First report by employers for one or more persons and the first monthly tax payment under the old age benefit section of the Social Security Act are due this week. File form SSI in quadruplicate for January and mail to the Omaha IRS collector with a check for the tax and with two witnesses or a notary as required.
The senior division of St Patrick's academy music class will present a free recital in the academy auditorium on Sunday February 28 at 8 p m The program features works by Elgar Brahms Schubert Toselli Beethoven Rachmaninoff and others with performances by the S P A orchestra clarinet duo saxophone trio piano duets a glee club and solo dancers plus a student recitation and a Venetian Love Song duet arrangement.
A. L. Haecker, deputy state director of agriculture, expressed optimism for Nebraska amid drought losses in 1934 and 1936. He predicted bumper crops with normal rains, noting rested land and stored plant food would boost production, and that herd reductions could lead to long term stock improvement.
Garden county surveys indicate a railroad line may be moved if the Keystone dam is built. Ross Vance says crews have mapped routes near Stapleton and through two or three valleys, including his land, to connect the Union Pacific line with the Kearney branch.
Application blanks for emergency seed loans were delivered to the farm bureau office with instructions on handling. A limited number of applications can be received at once and a definite closing date will be announced next week. Loans up to 400 dollars at 4 percent will be secured by a crop mortgage with landlord waivers required. The need may lessen due to new agricultural conservation payments now starting in the county.
Mrs. George Gipfert died from pneumonia after an influenza illness at a Sidney hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Lodge Pole Lutheran church, with interment in Sidney Greenwood cemetery. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, and other relatives.
Scouts from Scottsbluff Troop 2 achieved top scores at the Wye-Braska district event, earning an honor troop rating with 17534 total points. Troop 13 and Troops 25 of Torrington and 90 of Sidney also earned honors, while knot tying and signaling relays highlighted top finishes. H A Hawley presented a first place banner at the ceremony closing the event.
Lloyd Vacik 43 a Cheyenne county native who left about 15 years ago died Tuesday in Los Angeles after a month of illness following influenza and a mastoid operation. Survived by wife daughter Elaine father Vaclav Vacik of Rawlins three brothers Ben James Jerry Rawlins and three sisters Anna Bailey Lisco Theresa McNeff Rawlins and Julius Banta Grand Forks Ark. Body to Sidney for interment. Gehrig funeral home in charge with rites likely Sunday afternoon and burial in family plot south of Sunol.
Frances Rehmeier Cass county Gladys Weitkamp Washington county Miles Caldwallader Furnas county and Joe Carter Hitchcock county are Nebraska 1936 4 H champions winning trips to the national club camp in Washington They will represent about 23000 rural youths including Cheyenne county youths Cheyenne county candidates were Lemoyne Johnson Lodge Pole and Dorothy Lipke Sidney Ruth Kinton Sidney was named alternate for the county.
The city plans ward caucuses next Monday at 7:30 and a general meeting at 8. Ward times were shifted to 7:30 to boost turnout. Retiring councilmen F. G. Haworth ward one H. W. Ells ward two and George Thompson ward three are expected to be renominated. School board members Glen Bales and C. W. Smith also face re election with no other major city races. Liberal turnout and public scrutiny of city and school district management are urged.
Nebraska farmers shift from winter to spring wheat and barley for 1937 plantings as long droughts in summers and autumns reduced crop income. Western two thirds face winter-kill concerns, with many panhandle farmers delaying winter wheat and considering spring wheat options.
The fourth annual machinery sale will be held next Tuesday March 2 at The Sidney Livestock Pavilion Co A B Rapp announced this week. A sale advertisement lists part of the articles to be sold and more machinery will be added daily. A free lunch will be served at noon. Mr Rapp urges all prospective bidders to come early and bring their families. Col Rapp holds the big auction every year with strong attendance and high bids.
P H Stewart extension agronomist at the college of agriculture and secretary of the Nebraska Crop Growers association announces the 1937 list of certified seed supplies. The list highlights Superior varieties of oats barley sorghums alfalfa and hybrid corn with germination and purity data. It is issued due to current seed conditions and is available at the college or county offices.
Glenis Pearson daughter of L A Pearson and Kermit Moore son of Mr and Mrs George Moore were married at the Presbyterian church in Cheyenne on February 3. Rev Robert Caldwell officiated at 1 pm. The couple honeymooned by car to the west coast, visiting San Francisco Los Angeles Long Beach Boulder Dam and the Grand Canyon before returning via the south. Glenis is a Sidney high school graduate and trained nurse at Evangelical Covenant hospital in Omaha. Kermit also graduated from Sidney high school and attended the University of Nebraska and works with his father at Sidney Glass and Paint. They will reside at the Moore apartments.
Weather reports warned of rising temperatures but western Nebraska stayed colder. Snow flurries flitted across the panhandle with no ground cover as Sidney stayed below freezing all day. The sky was partly overcast and forecasts called for fair weather to return.
A short course in farm motors focusing on diesel power is planned by the Sidney schools through the department of vocational agriculture. Supt. G. F. Liebendorfer and J. W. Nielsen organize a part time evening class for farm boys and new farmers. It opens Monday night March 1 at 7 30 in the long building at 12th avenue and Jackson street. Sessions run Mondays and Tuesdays in March and April, with topics on diesel power principles construction costs maintenance operation and running a diesel engine, plus moving pictures and field guidance from diesel suppliers. Tuition free as part of vocational agriculture education.
