St Kearny Revisited in 1872 by Ric Porter at Fort Kearny

Ric Porter revisits Fort Kearny noting dilapidated garrison and relics while praising the budding town of Kearney Junction five miles away. He recalls old quarters, a solitary sergeant family, and a flagstaff linked to a legendary incident. Porter comments on vermin, smallpox rumors, and compares weather and fuel choices with corn prices driving wood scarcity.

Mulching Best But Also Has Some Problems

Stubble mulching controls wind erosion on plains but can lower yields of subsequent crops. Microbiologist T. M. McCalla notes toxic substances from microbial decomposition near the surface harm germinating seeds, especially in corn and sorghum stubble, with toxicity varying by stubble type, decay rate, and rainfall. Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station aided the study.
