Heart Fund Campaign Set to Start in Cheyenne County

Dr. John W. Platz of Sidney outlines the annual Heart Fund drive beginning this weekend with house to house solicitation mail campaigns and the neighborhood envelope method. Sidney chairwoman Mrs. D. L. Benisek assigns blocks for Heart Sunday while other towns run mail or neighbor to neighbor envelopes. Last year’s county total neared a county and state goal and organizers aim to surpass the all time high to fund heart research community service and education in Nebraska.

Grass Fire Near Sidney Suppressed by Vol Firefighters

Sidney volunteer firefighters were summoned Tuesday morning around 10 a.m. to contain a large grass fire three miles west of Sidney along the Union Pacific right of way. Reports say a section gang was burning weeds along the tracks and the blaze became unmanageable.

Early Resident Died Jan. 28 in California

Susan Lydia Waidely 93, mother of Glenn Moore of Sidney, died Jan. 28 in San Rafael California. Cremation held Jan. 31. Born in Vandalia Missouri to Hall Cunningham and wife. Came to Sidney before 1900, married Horace Moore in 1890. Survived by two children two grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The Moore family has deep local history dating to 1867.

Eight ADC Applications Approved In Cheyenne County

Dense sonic boom activity rattles the Denver and Sidney regions at about 1:45 PM Tuesday. Reports say cracked walls in Denver with no confirmed damage elsewhere. Officials point to a California based jet flying near 2000 mph, with Sioux Army Depot explosives cleared out, leaving a now quieter air lane for sonic booms.

A North of Colton wildcat by Bander and Couch and Tol tek Drilling Co. nears total depth in the Henry Field Cheyenne County about 13 miles west of Gurley. Strong Winds Drag Dust Through Tuesday Weather

Strong winds reached nearly 50 miles per hour at 2 PM Tuesday, blowing dust and keeping up through the evening. A pleasant weekend turned unsettled as the wind surged. Temperature ranged from 10 to 40 degrees on Monday and 16 to 50 on Tuesday.

Open winter gains little snow and near normal temperatures but persistent high winds dominate January and February. Gusts exceed 50 mph, dust clouds blot skies from western Nebraska farms, harming wheat and cattle, slowing traffic, with worse conditions in Colorado and blizzard activity in Cheyenne. The Weather Bureau forecasts wetter weather through mid March to curb topsoil erosion.

Load limits take effect Friday on Nebraska highways

Nebraska State Department of Roads will impose axle load limits at noon Friday on several routes. State Highway 71 from Scottsbluff to Hemingford. Highway 88 from Redington to Banner Morrill line. Highway 92 southeast of Broadwater. Spur 171 from Harrisburg to Highway 71. Single axle 14000 pounds. tandem 24000 pounds.

Long Runway Will Handle 580 Planes in Sidney

Frontier Airlines officials in Sidney say a completed airport expansion will allow Jet-Prop 580 aircraft to serve the city. Current DC-3 schedules are limited by aircraft size. A two to three month runway extension is planned.

Sidney Chamber seeks successor to secretary-manager

The Sidney Chamber of Commerce launched its search to replace Ron Mercer as secretary-manager. President Stan Larabee said a notice was sent to the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce about the vacancy effective March 10, with ads placed in Denver, Omaha and Kansas City. Mercer will become manager of Scottsbluff Chamber of Commerce after about a year and a half in Sidney, and the board welcomes suggestions from cities with experienced assistant managers. The Sidney chamber reports its largest membership ever at 346, with 105 new members, and aims to sustain momentum with a capable successor.

Lincoln Forty seven University of Nebraska students in agriculture were honored by the Nebraska Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta at a scholarship recognition dinner. 23 juniors and 24 sophomores were introduced by Dr. Wm. Colville, with Lloyd R. Reeder of Shelton receiving the top sophomore scholar award for 1965 66. The list includes Roger D. Luehrs, Sidney.
