Hog Market Slumps On Light Weight Hogs At Auction

The Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion reported lower prices for light butcher hogs in the 160-190 lb range with a $2 to $3 penalty for growers marketing them. At Saturday’s sale, 200-230 lb hogs sold for $19 to $19.50, heavier hogs $18 to $18.60, heavy sows $16.25, light feeder pigs $13 per head, heavier feeders $16 to $22, feeder steers 817 lbs $23.60, 825-875 lb steers $22.75-$23.25, 900+ lb lots $20-$22, Holstein steers 860 lb $20, yearling steers $25.25-$27, some calves and heifers $24-$28.25, butcher cows $15.50-$16.75, and cow-and-calf pairs up to $237 per round.

Mercer resigns as Sidney chamber chief to take Scottsbluff post

Ron Mercer, secretary manager of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce for 18 months, will resign March 10 to become chamber manager in Scottsbluff. He said the move comes with regret but the offer cannot be passed up. A special board meeting discussed the change and Mercer was offered a raise to stay. The Scottsbluff post had a prior manager resign to join Hiram Scott College public relations. Drive carefully.

William Walsh Rites Tuesday at St Patrick's Church

William E. Walsh age 73 died last Wednesday night. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St Patrick's Catholic Church. Rosary is tonight at 7:30 at Gehrig Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Born October 13, 1893 in Gilmore City Iowa he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad before moving to Sidney in 1942 to guard at Sioux Army Depot. He never married and is survived by a sister Mrs John Rogers of Gilmore City.
