Slocum defends 133 pound title by defeating Fred Steir of McCook in the state matfest finals. He extends his high school record to 47-0 over the past two years, finishing this season 24-0 with 19 pins. Phil Kurz of Sidney places fourth in the wrestling carnival.
The Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion reported lower prices for light butcher hogs in the 160-190 lb range with a $2 to $3 penalty for growers marketing them. At Saturday’s sale, 200-230 lb hogs sold for $19 to $19.50, heavier hogs $18 to $18.60, heavy sows $16.25, light feeder pigs $13 per head, heavier feeders $16 to $22, feeder steers 817 lbs $23.60, 825-875 lb steers $22.75-$23.25, 900+ lb lots $20-$22, Holstein steers 860 lb $20, yearling steers $25.25-$27, some calves and heifers $24-$28.25, butcher cows $15.50-$16.75, and cow-and-calf pairs up to $237 per round.
Ron Mercer, secretary manager of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce for 18 months, will resign March 10 to become chamber manager in Scottsbluff. He said the move comes with regret but the offer cannot be passed up. A special board meeting discussed the change and Mercer was offered a raise to stay. The Scottsbluff post had a prior manager resign to join Hiram Scott College public relations. Drive carefully.
The Legislature approved a bill by 41-0 final reading that deducts the cost of administering state school lands from revenue before profits are distributed to Nebraska schools. A constitutional amendment last November made this policy change possible, shifting funding from general funds to land revenues.
The Panhandle forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies through Tuesday. Westerly winds 15 to 25 mph this afternoon and Tuesday, lows 10 to 20, highs near 40. Snow probability under five percent. Five day outlook shows near normal temperatures through Saturday with frequent daily changes, highs in the 40s, lows near 20, occasional light snow scattered. In Sidney on a north side chase after midnight, Trooper John Trenerry narrowly avoided being struck by a car driven by Ricky Tilghman, 16. Tilghman faces willful reckless driving charges. a hearing before County Judge Sydney Finch is expected today.
June Bernice Scharrel 45 of Lodgepole died Sunday at Memorial Hospital in Sidney after long illness. Funeral at Immanuel Lutheran Church Lodgepole Wednesday 2 PM. burial Lodgepole Cemetery. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home in charge. Survived by parents seven sisters two brothers and numerous relatives. Memorials suggested to Memorial Hospital or Immanuel Lutheran Church.
District 30 Class D basketball playoffs begin in Sidney with six teams including Sidney St. Patrick's Academy Gurley Potter Lodgepole Dalton and Lorenzo. Openers Monday at 7 p.m. have St. Pat's vs Dalton and Gurley vs Lorenzo, winners advance to face Lodgepole and Potter Tuesday.
Four railroad trade union reps visited Sidney to urge protests against Burlington Railroad plans to discontinue passenger trains No 33 and 34 between Alliance and Brush Colorado. They warned loss would cut north south passenger and mail service, with protests due to ICC by Feb 28 under Docket 24462.
State Engineer John W. Hossack says the Federal Bureau of Roads has verbal approval for Sidney two interchanges and two rest areas on I 80 with nearby water test wells in progress. He expects no trouble and will inform Sidney officials if changes arise, noting the cooperative plan should benefit the community.
The Sidney High School Freshman Concert Band performs Sunday at 3 p.m. in the senior high auditorium. Director Dan Long notes a cornet solo by Tom Atkins and Susan Fisher serving as student conductor. the public is urged to attend.
Merle Bobo chairs Cheyenne County Centennial Committee. Downtown Sidney will host events on Saturday Aug 19 and Monday Aug 21 to boost attendance and reward merchants who close Tuesday Aug 22. The final leg of the Sidney Deadwood stage trip ends Monday Aug 21. The observance, tied to the Cheyenne County Fair, replaces Ft Sidney Days this year.
H N Dusty Rhodes received an enthusiastic sendoff at Sidney Airport despite needed repairs to his 1930 Brunner Winkle Bird. Parts were made in a near round the clock effort, allowing a 2 pm takeoff and a planned North Platte to Omaha Centennial reenactment flight Wednesday evening. ceremony included local officials and a christening of the plane “The Cheyenne County Bird.”

William E. Walsh age 73 died last Wednesday night. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St Patrick's Catholic Church. Rosary is tonight at 7:30 at Gehrig Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Born October 13, 1893 in Gilmore City Iowa he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad before moving to Sidney in 1942 to guard at Sioux Army Depot. He never married and is survived by a sister Mrs John Rogers of Gilmore City.
Auditions begin tonight for about 45 hopefuls competing in the Kiwanis Stars of Tomorrow finals set for Sunday March 5 at 2 p.m. in the Junior High School auditorium. Duane Johnson cites high quality acts from dance to music, with prizes including a $300 Sidney Business Institute scholarship and a $200 Senior Division scholarship.
