Sherman Hill route change aids westbound Union Pacific
Union Pacific plans a 42 mile westbound line along the south side of Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, replacing the steeper current grade of 1.55 percent to the hilltop. Eastbound traffic keeps the gentler existing route. The project recalls 1860s exploration led by Bridger and Stansbury, with Indian attacks and Dodge’s surveys shaping the crossing of the Laramie Mountains.
