Topsoil in Nebraska’s wheat belt benefited from light rain and snow over the past week ending a drought. Southern Panhandle and parts of south central Nebraska saw moisture. the crown and roots were protected, and the outlook for winter wheat remains excellent. Unhusked corn dried and improves, while stored corn outlook stays steady as farmers hasten drying and move grain to elevators. Farrowing hogs reported good litters, and lamb crop was favorable though some sheep losses in feed lots were noted. Some hay with ergot and Bangs disease concerns appeared in a few counties.

Emma G. Fritz, 71, a former Cheyenne County resident born in Rostock Germany on January 21 1881, died February 13 in Auburn Nebraska. Funeral services were held Friday at Casey Funeral Home Auburn with burial in Greenwood Cemetery Sidney beside her husband Carl A Fritz who died January 12 1942. She came to the United States at 19 as a governess and married in Hamburg Iowa August 27 1903. They lived in Nemaha County before moving to Cheyenne County. For years she resided with another woman in Auburn.

Auto Thief Wallice Is Sentenced In Nebraska Case
Robert C Wallice age 24 pleaded guilty to larceny by bailee in a hearing before District Judge John Kuns February 15 and was sentenced to one year to 18 months in the Nebraska State Reformatory. He admitted driving off in January in a 1937 Plymouth owned by Horn Motor Company while negotiating a car purchase, made a small down payment, fled, and wound up in Texas before authorities captured him. He was brought back to Sidney by Deputy Sheriff Arnold Braasch. The car’s whereabouts remain a mystery. Wallice had earlier been in Lufkin Texas on bad check charges.
