Lack of Rain Not Sole Driver of Great Plains Yields

A US Department of Agriculture study of 28 field stations across North Dakota to Oklahoma finds rainfall is not the sole limit on dry land yields. Over 218 crop years, many low yields occurred with adequate rain, while high yields happened with near-average rainfall due to other inhibiting factors. The report notes fertile soils and potential gains if nonrain factors are managed, but urges slow regional development and continued emphasis on stock raising with crops as a supplement.
