Ice Industry in Sidney Before Refrigeration Era
The ice business in Sidney grew from a small plant built by Art Hardy to larger operations in the roaring twenties. Dick Rogers and Raymond Rogers oversaw production and mechanics, with police chief Sol Willis among early staff. The plant reached 30 tons daily, storing about 100 tons, but demand exceeded supply in heat. ice was shipped in. Marvin Anthony ran deliveries, often 10 to 14 hour days, while Blip Doran and Doug Boyd kept books. The Union Pacific Hotel used major ice storage, and other locals like Avid Boyd and Roy Liggett engaged in the venture. Early devices included the Icy Ball, then Frigidaire, with cooling tech advancing until the ice business faded as electric refrigeration rose.
