Residents of Potter raised 15000 to help build a rest home addition at Memorial Hospital and spur broader fundraising. Ira Steward of Sidney, hospital board member, says the effort signals new thinking to raise the remaining 85000 for a 100000 goal, with potential countywide support and leadership from Potter. He praises Dean Hagemeister and Potter residents for leading the push and notes beds would increase to 14 to 16 and occupancy pressures at the hospital.
Potters community donations to the Memorial Rest Home fund rise by 245 this week. Contributions awaiting acknowledgment include Clifton and Mrs Thurston ten dollars and C E Smith one hundred six, Claus and Harry Arp one hundred ninety, A J Warren ten, Kenneth Rose twenty five. Total reaches fourteen thousand eight hundred sixty one with more to come. C E Smith from Lomeda says he is ready to contribute to the home for the aged and Potter folks will do their part. The drive has elicited unanimous support with no objections voiced.
Sidney Rotary Club members at the country club heard Alvin Duis and photographer Ralph Thompson present a union program on still pictures and images to show how focus is achieved in photography. Jonson of Sidney High School was introduced as an outstanding student with musical talent and an interest in becoming an engineer.
Oil and gas activity in Nebraska reports Cased No 2 Slama near Potter awaiting cable tools for tests after a 270 foot drill stem fluid recovery. If productive it would be the field’s second well within two miles, as others drill in surrounding areas while overall state production declines to 51,902 barrels daily.
Nine Republican senators from wheat producing states joined a move to force Secretary Benson to peg government wheat price supports at not less than $2 a bushel for the 1958 crop. Benson had announced an average support of $1.78 per bushel. Senators Mundt Case Young Curtis Hruska Carlson Schoeppel Thye Dworshak urged maintaining $2 supports to keep prices at the then level. Mundt said the aim is to stabilize prices through the 1958 crop year while seeking a longer-term solution.
County Assessor Roy Gish warns Cheyenne County residents about a new state law from last March requiring anyone employed in the county for more than 30 days to pay the tax and display a current license plate. Those at Sioux Ordnance Depot and others covered have until March 1 to comply.
The annual Nebraska State picnic will be held at Bixby Park in Zone Beach, Calif on Saturday Feb 22. Nebraskans will register by county of former residence to meet and visit with old friends.

George Fleming of Sidney filed for reelection on the Democratic ticket seeking a fourth term as Cheyenne County Commissioner. A prominent figure in Nebraska county government circles, Fleming is a former president of both the Nebraska and Panhandle County Officials associations and has served as a state director focusing on legislation. He comes from a long-established Lorenzo farming family and remains active in Sidney civic affairs.
The annual Dance Night in Sidney returns Saturday February 15 at the new National Guard Armory beside Legion Park. The 78th Fireman's Ball features Millacd Music with extra players, runs from 9 pm to 1 am, and raises funds for the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department.
Rep. AL Miller arrived in the 4th district and listed ten accomplishments of the Eisenhower administration including the end of OPA and price controls, tax cuts, private industry restoration, civil rights progress, and years of peace and prosperity. He criticized the farm program and warned against alarmist critics and Kremlin influence.
The depot establishes the Sioux Community Service Award to honor individuals who contribute to the depot community. Nominations go to the Civilian Personnel Policy Board, which evaluates and recommends to the depot commander for presentation of a signed certificate. Employment or residence is not a condition for nomination or award.
Virgil Bayne of the Union Pacific urges drivers to stop look and listen at railroad crossings as part of a national safety drive. He notes crossings cause severe crashes and praises police enforcement and the Boy Scouts 1958 Safety Good Turn program mobilizing 4.5 million scouts to promote caution and adherence to traffic signs.
Local elevator sources quoted wheat at 180 per bushel today. The report notes market activity and price level for the grain.
Rev W A Norton, former Army major and regimental chaplain for the 33rd Infantry, has been stationed about seven weeks at Sioux Ordnance Depot and Ordville. He serves as auxiliary chaplain for civilian and military personnel, living in Ordville with his wife and two sons, David 18 in the Army and Paul 13 at Sioux Ordville school.

Senator Roman Hruska Nebraska will be the featured speaker. Dinner starts 6 45 pm Everett Dennis says other guests include Richard Speirs state chairman Gov Victor Anderson Congressman A L Miller and possibly more GOP officers.
A sharp Arctic air surge hit the Nebraska Panhandle Tuesday, bringing frigid conditions. Airports read seven below zero while town officials logged one below, with ice and slick roads creating hazardous travel and heavy clothing the norm for workers.
Increasing cloudiness tonight and tomorrow with light snow starting late tonight or tomorrow morning. Temperatures range from a low of zero to 10 above and a high of 15 to 25.
A freezing snap left streets slick with patches of ice and light snow across the area. Garages rushed to aid stranded motorists as patrols urged staying off the roads. several minor crashes were reported including a rear-end collision on 1th and Toledo and a fence impact near Sioux Ordnance Depot with no injuries.
