Seeded Grass Pastures Surpass Native Range Gains
Agronomist O K Barnes reports an eight year study at Archer Station comparing seeded pastures with native range. Crested wheatgrass Lewis varieties, Russian wildrye and western wheatgrass outperformed native rangeland with lamb gains up to 67 pounds per acre yearly. Mixed pastures offered mixed results and long term declines in productivity observed after year three.

Crested Wheat Grass Cultivation and Seed Guidelines
Soil conservation notes urge using nurse crops to seed beds and recommend heavy soil seed depths of half to one inch, sandy soils one to two and a half inches. Germination and purity determine seeding rates, typically 5 to 10 pounds per acre for sturdy stands with 173 000 to 225 000 seeds per pound. Crested Wheat Grass spreads by seed, tillers in clumps but does not form a true sod, yields 200 to 500 bushels per acre in favorable years when planted in cows. Harvest timing should be when most heads turn brown or seed is firm dough, not brittle, to minimize shattering. grain binders or combines may be used with care. Seed weighs 24–26 pounds per bushel after cleaning. many acres in Western Nebraska have shown good results for reestablishing abandoned land and worn-out pastures.

New Formula Proposed For Wheat In 1951
The agriculture department proposed a new wheat allotment formula based on average plantings over ten years with a 1 percent reserve to mitigate drastic county reductions. The plan would reduce the 1951 national allotment from 68,944,000 acres to about 69,944,000 acres and shift base periods to five years for 1952 and later crops, with Colorado highlighted for gains under the change.
