Rail freight a small share of selling price says railroad official
An eastern railroad vice president told the Interstate Commerce Commission that freight rates remain a minor portion of total commodity prices, even as costs rise since the war. He notes prices of moved goods have climbed over two and a half times faster than transportation costs, reflecting inflation and efficiency in service. ICC hearings on a moderate rate increase began in November to cover rising operation costs and to ensure railroads remain financially healthy to meet demand.
