Poinsettias Need Dark to Grow Best
U S Department of Agriculture researchers led by Dr. H A Borthwick and Dr. M W Parker show poinsettias flower best under an 8 hour light 16 hour dark photoperiod for five to seven weeks even for small cuttings. Complete darkness about 16 hours daily yields the richest blooms, while any light interruptions mid night can halt flowering. A black cloth cover can help maintain the long dark period in a living room setting.
