Poinsettia Named After Statesman Joel Poinsett
The poinsettia known as the Christmas Plant bears the name of Joel Roberts Poinsett the American statesman and U S ambassador to Mexico who introduced the plant to American botanists. Upon returning to South Carolina he cultivated it which spurred its popularity. The plant thrives in warm homes best kept 70 to 80 degrees by day and at least 65 at night. Sudden temperature drops can cause leaf drop making the festive blooms a prized holiday decoration.
