1954 Record Year for West Nebraska Oil Fields
West Nebraska saw several new fields opened in 1954 including Swearingen No. 1 and unnamed finds in Kimball County and two in Banner County. Long, Enders, and Southwest Potter led production with Long at about 2,500 barrels per day. Ohio Oil Co and Stanolind, Rock Hill, Magnolia Petroleum were major state producers with multi hundred thousand to over two million barrels yearly.

Truck Swerves and Cars Hit Ditch East of Sidney
Mrs Marietta Remington a 19 year old from Big Springs sustained minor injuries when her eastbound car rolled onto its side in a ditch five miles east of Sidney on US 30 after a semi driven by Bill Barnes passed closely. James Gyger 52 of Chappell escaped injury by taking to the ditch. Damages to Remington car estimated at $200.
