The Wickard couple at Lodgepole report a major rush for their Nativity display. The open house, running through early January, draws hundreds daily with free coffee and cookies. Visitors include international guests from Japan and Germany.
Cheyenne County treasurer Herb Stevens said auto license plates will be issued with the same numbers as this year for all county motorists. New applicants will receive high numbers starting from 600. existing plates remain automatic. Plates may be obtained beginning Jan 3, and tax notices go out this week. A combined tax receipt and registration certificate is required to obtain a plate, with payment due then. Drivers may use last year’s plates for up to two months, as courthouse staff expect a rush at the start and end of that period.
The National Safety Council called for a nationwide Christmas savings plan to reduce holiday accidents. President Ned H Dearborn urged Americans to join before the holidays to yield a real yuletide bonus in human lives. The council outlined four safety tips: drive carefully in bad weather, keep trees watered and lights safe, prevent falls, and avoid drinking before driving.

Sugar beet production quotas will be set around January 1 for about six factory districts in Wyoming and western Nebraska. The Wyoming ASC announced a statewide plan for acreage allotments, with quotas to be set area by January 1 and individual quotas by February 1. Wyoming’s quota totals 34,000 acres, down 5,000 from 1954, as nationwide allotments were cut 10 percent.
The 1954 social security amendments take effect January 1 1955 extending coverage to 3 500 000 farm owners operators and families. The program now reaches nine of ten American workers and dependents offering protection against loss of income in old age or death and highlighting the nation’s shift toward broader economic security for farmers and workers.
The information bulletin Farm ers' 1954 Income Tax is now available at county agricultural agents and the University of Nebraska Agricultural Extension Service in Lincoln. Dr. Everett E. Peterson announced this today. A petition for probate of Arthur J. Oberndorfer of Gurley who died December 10 at age 65 has been filed in Cheyenne County Court. The will names widow Hilda as sole heir and beneficiary, with children Normand Leonard Ruth and Clarice noted as survivors. Oberndorfer owned several quarters of Cheyenne County farmland and was a retired farmer.

Ernest Madsen a 38 year old Sidney electrician delivering Santa Claus duties was hurt when his 1951 station wagon left a county road south of Huntsman crashed into a bridge railing and tumbled15 feet into a gully He suffered a shoulder separation and a cut on his forehead and was helped to Sidney by a passing motorist after crawling from the wreckage He had been spreading cheer to Gurley children last night and was returning to Sidney when the accident occurred.
Clifford McKellips alias Carl Jarrad alias Carl Bodner yesterday bound over to district court on counts of writing a no account check and uttering a forged instrument. McKellips, 40, of Sidney, pled guilty before County Judge Curt Smith. Bond set at $1,000, he could not pay. He allegedly wrote a $10 check to Cheyenne County Lumber Co with no funds and cashed a $22.75 check bearing a fictitious Delbert Grahman signature. He may be arraigned in district court next week before Judge Nisley or Judge Kuns.
Ohio Oil Co reports fair oil recovered from Engelland No 4 in Engelland area northeast of Sidney. Ryan Oil Co says core from Graham No 1 shows nine feet of good sand saturation, but water risk may limit production. If Graham No 1 proves producing, new pool opens in Cheyenne County, with three new fields already uncovered this week. Additional wildcats include Wytex State No 1, Jacobson No 1, Jurgens No 1, while Some dry holes and recent rig movements also noted across Cheyenne, Banner, Kimball, and Morrill counties. New Obering Johnson No 4 in Banner County produces 30 barrels per hour.
Kimball City Council wrestles with an oil drilling ordinance as it weighs 20 acre spacing for four wells on a southeastern 80 acre tract. Landowners threaten to move land out of the city if four wells are not allowed. Proposals contrast 40 acre spacing to 20 acre spacing to drain potential pools while preserving city aesthetics. Royalty from a 100 barrel per day well would be less than seven dollars monthly per average lot in a 40 acre block, with higher returns under 20 acre spacing but over a shorter period.
