Judge Studies Land Rentals In Lincoln Court
Judge John L. Polk of Lincoln has taken under advisement suits by Banner and Kimball County residents to block higher rentals on school lands they lease. The lessees seek to vacate or reverse the state board of educational lands and funds valuations set last May. Atty A Jions of Kimball, representing lessees, says figures were arbitrarily set by lawmakers. He notes rental increases 15 to 50 percent across four land classes, arguing lack of fair hearing. The land is farmed on a 6 percent of appraised value basis. Assistant Attorney General Robert A Nelson defends higher valuations as necessary.

Road program cost would average $12
Gov. Val Peterson outlined a highway plan before the Nebraska Stock Growers association in Alliance noting motorists would pay about $12 more yearly in extra taxes. He argued savings in reduced car repairs offset the higher costs, with roughly $5 added for gasoline per cent tax and about $7 more per car registration. The plan calls for 306 miles of new highway in the Sandhills, underscoring state needs.
