Sweet Clover Gains Ground In Nebraska Pastures

Nebraska reports show sweet clover acres rising from 65 000 in 1922 to 125 000 in 1923 with strong 1924 growth expected. Cattle eat and gain well on sweet clover, outproducing blue grass and permanent pasture, especially with combined first and second year fields to extend grazing. Some bloating concerns exist but overall soil building value remains top priority and hay use is limited to emergencies.

Secretary G. L. Shumway of the Nebraska department of agriculture reports inquiries over a 10 cent per head brand inspection fee charged by nine large western stockyards to shippers of live stock. The fee was recently raised to 10 cents by agreement among the stockyards, replacing the former lower rate.

Cattle brand fees questioned amid stockyard inspections

Shumway says a claim that federal and Nebraska agriculture departments approved shipper fees is false. About 800000 cattle are slaughtered and over one million feeders pass Omaha yards yearly, yielding 180000 dollars in brand inspection fees. Fees reportedly return to live stock associations, with shippers asking where funds go and whether nonmembers become members. Some shippers support the system for theft protection.
