Dressing Children For Cold Weather
University of Nebraska Extension expert Gerda Petersen advises dressing kids in layered, temperature responsive clothing to prevent overheating and cold related injuries. For wet cold use lightweight base layers and a water repellent coat. for dry cold add wool socks, heavier mittens, and warmer cap. for extreme cold add long underwear, scarves, and multiple layers to trap air. Mittens preferred over gloves to keep fingers warm. Jeans are discouraged in harsh cold. The dressing theory mimics home insulation by trapping air between layers.
